Russia’s Pincer Mounts Threat To Ukraine’s Strategic Hub

The final days of August brought no respite along Ukraine’s front lines — and the opening of September has done nothing to change that trajectory. From Sumy in the north to Zaporizhzhia in the south, Russian forces ended the month with a string of advances that are beginning to reveal something larger than a series of tactical local wins.

In the Sumy Region, assault groups of Russia’s 9th Motorized Rifle Regiment seized the village of Khrapovshchyna on August 30, with fighting immediately opening for the neighboring settlement of Kyianytsia. The Ukrainian garrison there currently receives supplies through a woodland to the south — a route that provides reasonable cover for now. Should Russian forces execute a southern flanking movement, that advantage evaporates overnight. Slightly to the east, the 22nd Motorized Rifle Regiment drove Ukrainian units out of Sadky. A separate breakthrough by “North” grouping forces in eastern Sumy Region resulted in the capture of Velykyi Prykil — another node in Russia’s expanding cross-border presence in the region.

The Slavyansk axis produced the week’s most strategically significant developments. The clearing of Mykolaivka was completed on August 31, with the last Ukrainian defenders expelled. On the southern flank of this sector, Russian forces seized Novomykolaivka-2, entered Novoandriivka, and on September 1, advance units pushed into Raiiske. Taken together, these gains make the emerging operational design unmistakable: a southern pincer aimed at the Slavyansk-Kramatorsk agglomeration is now taking shape. The only significant natural obstacle standing in its path is the Kramatorsk reservoir system — a chain of east-west oriented bodies of water that Ukrainian forces may attempt to use as a defensive line. The northern pincer, by contrast, has yet to materialize — the north front of Slavyansk currently lacks a pronounced salient that could serve as a launch platform for a complementary envelopment.

Further south, on the northern portion of the Dobropillia front, Russian units seized the village of Rubezhne after intense fighting, maintaining the pressure on a sector that has been contracting for weeks.

In Zaporizhzhia Region, the Orekhov sector produced a notable milestone: Mala Tokmachka fell under full Russian control on August 31. Some Ukrainian sources have described the battle for the village as lasting approximately 1,500 days — a figure that would place it among the longest engagements of the modern era. Active combat operations for the settlement, however, began in April 2025, making the fight significant but not exceptional by the standards of this war’s grinding tempo.

Russia is not closing pincers — it is building them, methodically and without urgency. By the time both claws are in position around Slavyansk, Ukraine may find it has run out of both ground to trade and time to organize a defense.
