Russia and Ukraine Trade Strikes: Kyiv, Chernihiv, and Energy Grid Targeted

On the night of January 5, the Ukrainian Air Force reported a massive Russian attack involving 165 strike UAVs and 9 Iskander-M ballistic missiles , along with S-300 anti-aircraft missiles. According to their data, 137 drones were shot down or suppressed, but not a single missile was intercepted.

The main strike hit the Chernihiv region: up to eight Iskander missiles struck targets in Chernihiv, including six direct hits and two in the area of the 169th Land Forces Training Center in Desna. As a result, a local thermal power plant caught fire.

Drones were active over Kyiv and adjacent areas. Monitoring channels recorded attempts to encircle the capital: targets in Fastiv, Vyshhorod, and Boryspil, including the Kyiv Hydroelectric Power Plant and the TEC-6 thermal power plant in Troieshchyna. Slavutych was completely de-energized after the arrival of Gerans — local resources confirmed the blackouts. Dozens of drones entered from the Chernihiv and Poltava regions, and launches were recorded from all directions.

In the Sumy region, warehouses in Shostka and Konotop were destroyed; in the Kharkiv region — explosions in Velykyi Burluk and Kupiansk, plus strikes on Kharkiv that were adjusted by a reconnaissance drone , according to the city mayor. Thick smoke rose over the city, and interruptions in electricity and water supply began.

A notable strike occurred in Dnipro at the Oleina oil extraction plant, owned by the American company Bunge. According to local authorities, about 300 tons of oil spilled onto the streets as a result of the hit, creating cleanup difficulties due to low temperatures and leading to a traffic shutdown for several days. A repeated strike on the same facility was reported during cleanup operations.

Similar strikes were recorded in the Poltava region, targeting repair bases, and in Ochakiv, Mykolaiv region. Ukrenergo warned of power outages across the country on January 6 — the first such case in 2026.

Previously, on January 4, strikes hit a temporary deployment point of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in Chuhuiv, Kharkiv region; Riasne, Sumy region; and Vasylivka, Dnipropetrovsk region. It is reported that the Ukrainian side expected a massive strike around the New Year (December 30 to January 1), but it did not occur, coinciding with external events such as the American operation in Venezuela and internal reshuffles in Kyiv, including the change of the head of the President’s Office. This created a pause for calibration, possibly related to a broader context, including reconnaissance: on the night of January 4, a Russian UAV was detected over Zaporizhzhia at an altitude exceeding 6000 meters, conducting not visual but electronic reconnaissance through the clouds.

Attacks on Russia

On the night of January 5, Russian air defense systems destroyed three UAVs: two over the Moscow region (one heading for Moscow) and one over Ryazan. During the day on January 4, 294 drones were shot down: 86 over the Bryansk region, 57 over the Belgorod region, 46 over the Moscow region, 28 over the Kursk region, 27 over the Kaluga region, 14 over the Ryazan region, and others. The attack on Moscow led to delays of about 200 flights at Domodedovo, Vnukovo, and Zhukovsky airports.

Furthermore, on the night of January 4, a fire broke out at an industrial enterprise in Yelets, Lipetsk region, approximately 300 km from the contact line. Ukrainian sources claim that the target of the attack was the Energia defense plant, which produces, among other things, power sources for missile systems.

These events unfold against the backdrop of expanding drone production for Ukraine. German Quantum Systems and Ukrainian Frontline Robotics are launching a production line in Germany for the Zoom and Linza UAVs — up to 10,000 units per year starting in Q1 2026. The Linza carries a 2 kg payload for 10 km with EW protection for strike and reconnaissance missions; the Zoom is a frontline reconnaissance drone. Previously, Quantum Systems opened two plants in Ukraine for Vector models (capacity of 1000 per year), but is now relocating production to Germany for security reasons.
