On the night of August 22, Russian forces launched a combined strike on Ukraine. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the attack involved Iskander-M and S-400-launched ballistic missiles, three Kh-31P/Kh-59 air-launched missiles, Banderol loitering munitions, and 217 strike UAVs.
Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed that strikes had been carried out against a military airfield, fuel-energy and transport infrastructure facilities used by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, UAV and component storage sites, as well as temporary deployment points of Ukrainian formations and foreign mercenaries at 146 locations.
In addition to the previously reported strikes on the Darnytsia depot, the Brovary logistics center, and the warehouse near Boryspil, Ukrainian media reported a strike in the area of the Bortnychi aeration station — a key component of Kyiv’s wastewater treatment infrastructure. There was no official confirmation that the station itself was hit. A prolonged shutdown could disrupt wastewater collection and treatment, creating potential environmental and public-health risks, including the discharge of untreated wastewater into the Dnipro River.
In Odesa Region, the railway station in Rozdilna was attacked during the night.
In Poltava Region, a strike was conducted using a Geran-4 UAV against a logistics center — a warehouse complex in the Shevchenkivskyi district of Poltava. The impact resulted in a fire and heavy smoke.
In Lviv, a fire was reported at the Iskra plant. Officially, the enterprise produces LED lighting systems, but there is information linking it to the eponymous Zaporizhzhia Research and Production Complex Iskra — a defense enterprise within Ukroboronprom that manufactures dual-use and military-purpose products. In 2022, Ukrainian authorities decided to evacuate equipment from the Zaporizhzhia facility to Lviv and Uzhhorod.
Strikes were also recorded in Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv Region.
Strikes on Russia
Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed that 457 Ukrainian UAVs had been shot down overnight over 16 regions.
By early morning, reports indicated that three sites in Russia had been hit. In Samara Region, the Novokuybyshevsk oil refinery, located 920 km from the line of contact, and the OZON logistics hub in Chapayevsk were attacked. A fire broke out at the Ozon warehouse; 500 employees were evacuated, and there were casualties. Warehouse operations have been suspended indefinitely.
In Krasnodar Krai, the seaport in Yeysk was attacked. According to preliminary reports, a vessel was on fire. In Belgorod Region, in the settlement of Dubovoye, a Ukrainian UAV struck a passenger bus; preliminary reports indicate three civilians were injured. There were also reports of an attack on the Engels airbase in Saratov Region.
In the Black Sea, the container vessel RMS TEAM, en route from Gemlik, Turkey, to Novorossiysk, was attacked by a naval drone. Eleven crew members were rescued; one remains missing. Turkish operator Akkon Lines reported that the vessel and its cargo were beyond repair.
Against the backdrop of ongoing daily strikes on both sides, Erik Prince, founder of the American private military company Blackwater, has launched Vectus Air Defense Systems, according to Axios. The company is focused on protecting civilian and commercial infrastructure — airports, data centers, oil refineries, and shipping routes — from mass drone attacks involving low-cost UAVs. The system incorporates electronic warfare measures, a swarm of interceptor drones (technology being developed jointly with Ukrainian firm Swarmer), large-caliber rapid-fire guns, and advanced target detection and tracking sensors. The system is not intended to provide full-scale military air defense against aircraft and missiles, and the description does not mention systems such as Patriot or NASAMS.
