Russia and Turkey allegedly signed a secret deal allowing Turkish-backed militants to attack the US-backed Kurdish fighters in Syria in exchange for Turkey abandoning Idlib, Nordic Monitor reported on August 9th.

— Nordic Monitor (@nordicmonitor) August 8, 2019
The outlet based its report on a supposed claim by a senior Turkish opposition member of parliament. The Nordic Monitor obtained a copy of a parliamentary question by Ünal Çeviköz, deputy chairperson of Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP).
As per the question, Turkey and Russia signed a secret agreement allowing Turkish-backed Free Syrian Army (FSA) forces to attack areas controlled by the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) in Syria.
The former ambassador Çeviköz said that in return, Turkey agreed to withdraw all of its troops and equipment from Idlib.
The question itself dates even earlier – to May 6th, 2019.
Çeviköz submitted his question asking Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu if the claim was true. A response was rejected, but as per law he was required to provide an answer within 2 weeks from May 6th.
Çeviköz further accused the Turkish government of interfering in Syria’s domestic politics and sought information on a possible date for direct contact with Syria.
He further asked about security measures to stop terrorists from entering Turkey after leaving Idlib and a way to separate radical groups from “moderate opposition” in line with the Astana/Sochi process to resolve the Syrian conflict.
Turkey has long sought to seek international support, or at least approval, for a possible sweeping operation against the YPG (and the US-backed SDF) in northern Syria. Th US has repeatedly said that the Kurdish militias (the core of the SDF) are its allies and should be protected, thus it wouldn’t be a surprise for Turkey to turn to Russia.
According to the Nordic Monitor, the alleged deal is a way to force US into agreeing to the Turkish operation, after Moscow agrees.
On August 7th, the Turkish Defense Ministry and the US Embassy in Turkey released a joint statement announcing plans to cooperate in the establishment of a safe zone in northern Syria.

According to Nordic Monitor, this is the US attempted to counter the deal with Russia.
A July 26th Human Rights Watch report claimed that Turkey was detaining hundreds of Syrians and forcibly returning them to Idlib and the northern Aleppo Governorate through the Cilvegözü/Bab al-Hawa border crossing.
The report of the Russian-Turkish agreement could potentially be partially true, but it is unclear how it is being implemented.
The Syrian Army is currently working to eliminate militants in the area of Khan Shaykhun in southern Idlib and liberate norhern Hama. Further developments, including Ankara’s reaction to these developments, would allow to get more details on the real Russia-Turkey agreements on the situation in the idlib zone.
MORE ON THE TOPIC:
Sounds like Turkey shit to me, made in Zion.
If they “allegedly signed a secret deal” than why was Turkey sending that convoy to Khan Shaykun and what were those Turk F-16 for (sightseeing Idlib myabe?!)?
Who stopped them if not Russia?!
Why don’t you stop playing useful idiots in the service enemies of Asad and Russia with stupid articles like that?!
There are already too many biased anti-Russia idiots on this forum already who try to make divide out of nothing. Do not feed them !
Exactly, this some dumb shit, even beats Jew Hollywood propaganda. Imagine Russia releasing a “secret” agreement to all the Jew Bilderberg/Murdoch Russophobic media :)
Zio-llywood
Who says it is high school drop-out Turkish?
Read the silly clauses and historical references and secondly Russia being the dominant power would have written the agreement in Russian if it was genuine. This is bogus shit and Satmak için bir köprüm var.
I am not Turkish nor do I speak Turkish so I ask out of curiosity.
Well the Russians may have a Russian- language copy to show or store as I do not know which language such treaties are drawn up in.
I always assumed they would be drawn up in both languages .
So if it is in crap Turkish then it is a fake as you say.
I always expected Turkey to be smart enough to cooperate with Syria & Russia… because of the Potential Threat an American Financed & Armed STRONG YPG/PKK/SDF poses to Turkey…The U.S. is done in the Middle East despite desperate attempts to stay… They will leave the Kurds behind like they did with Vietnamese Collaborators & in the First Gulf War in Iraq… Once the Americans leave, the Kurds will sign any agreement on the Negotiation Table… Turkey can be the Tool to give the Kurds some ears to Hear… Once Syria is Liberared them Turks should piss off again & keep good relations with Syria…which would mean good cooperation & thus Security along the Syrian/ Turkish border… the Turkish Masonic Muslimbrotherhood will try to stick with ZIONATO is my guesstimate… So Turkey be Smart…Chose for the Victors
Turkey will be “smart enough to cooperate” only if US kicks them out of NATO or gives them severe sanctions for S-400 or similar….
For the moment that is not the case so Turkey is doing what they do the best – they are being double faced BITCHES as usual catering to everybody and betraying everybody!
Turks are opportunist to the extreme and Betrayal is their true and only name.
With country like that one can’t make long term agreement about anything.
They can’t be “smart”because they only want to be winners all the time and they look for nothing else. Even if they have to sell their own mother they’ll do it, just to go ever more up.
For me that’s approach of perfect loser.
I would put all my money on Russia either way situation turns Russia will be winner.
They are not opportunists.
They are after building something positive that will last long and they are doing it not only for their own interests but for well-being of that region.
Today Turkish “fluctuated alliances” that can change not by the day but buy the minute….
create tense situation.
Everybody in this game is walking very thin line and everybody is waiting that somebody makes mistake or puts oneself in difficult position so that others can take advantage of the moment.
One thing is sure – there is no alternative to Russian plan of removing Zionist Jihad from Syria.
Nobody can stop that any more.
Dualism is to be found in almost every Nation on this Planet thanks to Imperialistic Divide & Conquer… TRAITORS are Everywhere….but WE the People own the True Power…We can TAKE it whenever WE Want…the Choice is OURS…
Forget it. Turkey is a NATO member with nuclear weapons ready to de fired to Russia and China. It is impossible to trust Turkey ever.
Trust is a Big word in the World of today…
spot on!
Turkey is a NATO member but nobody has right to touch nukes without US approval let alone to use them.
Those nukes are US property in service of NATO but also US is boss of NATO as well, so only they can decide anything about nukes not Turkey.
So as usual you are source of disinformation and confusion.
Turkey withdraws from Idlib and then attacks Kurds, (U(S backbone there) then they “force” kurds to make peace with Assad.
That is the Scenario I had in mind the past 1.5 year or so hehehe…the Middle East needs Unity to overcome the AngloZioNazi Divide & Impera… better for everyone…Kurds were stupid Retards to become Traitors in the first place…while in fact they could have been Heroes…
Turks need to play along smart ass, they need to withdraw quietly and little by little and convince their jihadi scumbags that they still care, and mostly the US nato scum, its all a slow cleverly played chess game for everyone involved. You are seeing stuff in such a simple minded way , it´s not that easy.
The report of the Russian-Turkish agreement could potentially be partially true, but it is unclear how it is being implemented.
It is quite clear, it is not being implemented and never will be, because it does not exist.
The only problem with that “secret” plan is that line of the separation between 2 sides is on Syrian – Turk border and not in Idlib…
Just eras that line in Syrian territory.
You know you way back to Turkey…start packing…
Even if that is a true, I see no bad about that.
Turkey will leave Idlib so SAA could easier liberate this part of Syria land.
Turkish backed terrorists will replace US backed SDF in north Syria? Even better because it is much easier to attack Turkish dogs than US dogs.
And where does the large Kurd population go to?
Unless of course, you think they should all be exterminated.
In the liberated part of Syria until the SAA liberates this occupied part of Syrians land, if they think that can not survive under occupation.
You thought, and you said, the extermination of the Kurds was the solution, not me…
What you propose – independent northeast Syria Kurdish state?
I propose that the US leaves Syria and Iraq that would focus the minds of the Kurds to reconcile with their Elected Syrian Government.
Another Syrian refugee crisis is not to the benefit of anyone, except the USA and Israel.
The US leaving would precipitate that, for sure. However, the US leaving has always been the problem, that and the stupidity of the Kurds for being plain stupid. I really don’t care about the Kurds at this point, but have no desire to see them genocided. They could, however, all go to Turkey where they could cut out their own territory there if stealing land is their desire. Maybe the US could back them up there.
That would really be Karma :)
I dont think so….Russia told to Turkish military staff that support terrorist in Idlib is a Mission impossible…and will waste resources and men..that only benefits the SDF…
Secret released to public ? This is bullshit, to distort what is going on right now in Idlib.
What a non-sense :)
No shit!
Yeah, Russia stroked a deal with Turkey to handle Idlib to Assad and ‘in exchange’ Turkey backed militants to attack the Kurds…wtf? where is Russia in this deal??
That this is an article from/for the brainwashed west is a no-brainer. Just another propaganda piece, adding 1 and 1 and getting 5. What countries would actually create such a document and then sign it? IF there were such a deal, it would be an informal understanding and would not be a state sanctioned signed agreement. Does Lavrov send a signed document when he informs the Turks they are going to attack Turkish proxies if they continue violations? No, but Turkey gets the message. When the US proposes to slice and dice Syria, do they sign papers saying so? This is the kind of manure the west is fed daily. Besides, who in their right mind would ever trust any document signed by Turdo? How much weight would anyone put behind it? Sure as hell Putin wouldn’t…but he would play along and use the idiot for all he was worth.
Zman, Lavrov said that Turkey was notified that “they are going to attack Turkish proxies if they continue violations”, and that means, in a diplomat mouth, an diplomatic notification.
But there was no signed document, which is the point. There is no doubt that Turdo still got the message, right?
A diplomatic note must be a signed and authenticated document. May be today isn’t need a paper support, but in any case need signature ( or signatures) and autentication.
aie for the kurds uhuh!
they are the patsies in this game – always has been and always will be!
a safe corridor in Syria’s northeast – are they delusional or just plain stupid or just playing for time. guess the latter – sdf and ypg will have to face the saa in a short while and also face the turkish army since syria and turkey’s interests are aligned where the kurds are concerned. and it will follow that the russian airforce will be hot on the heels of the saa (like in idlib) so the kurds will find themselves in a hard place and it’s hard to see how the unhinged states of A will act and might even try to resume good contacts with turkey by offering up the f35s as token of their friendship. but that won’t suffice since the kurds are a red blankett for the turks and if they can have some help from the russians they will take it before accepting anything like f35s from the mentally disabled governement in washington dc. after all russia can sell some good jets to turkey at a much more favourable price whereas the f35s are sold with a 50% mark up to cover profits and dividends!
if but if Maybe but if hoping lolololololololol
why dont Folks just check the hard actual Facts on the Ground.
1. Turkey was the number 1 Sponsor of ISIS….buying their oil and selling it to satanic Israel
2. 99.9% of all jihadi pricks came to syria through Turkey
3. Turkey is a NATO member
4. Putin(not Russia) allowed Turkey to invade Afrin and occupy it
5. Putin(not Russia) made the bullshit “deescalation” Agreement with Turkey in Idlib, which is Nothing other than the again green light for Turkey to invade Idlib and build 12 Military bases(they now have 14 bases in Idlib)
6.Putin(not Russia) is Standing down for years now after 2000+ attacks by israeli airforce on syria
7. Putin stood down after IDF USED a russian Military plane as cover to attack syria, hence killing all russians on board
8.Putin sold the S-400 to Turkey , the greatest enemy of the syrian arab republic
9. Syria in 2019 is partioned and occupied by NATO Forces in the North-afrin, east-USA,south-USA, west Israel
10. Turkey just 3 days ago made the Agreement with ist NATO Partner USA for the east of syria
Those are the fucking FACTS on the Ground…..like it or not…. and Alice in Wonderland bs wont Change it.
Question; wwho is more difficult for SAA and allied Forces to deal with????
the treacherous kurds or the turkish armed Forces???
smart asses
This is the silliest article I’ve read this morning. Why would the TFSA attack the YPG and SDF in Aleppo Province when the SAA is sharing front line positions with them?
How about a deal where Syrians can keep their land and in return, you get nothing..? Sounds good to me!
Excellent.
To those who doubt it: When SF says it may be true, they DO have a reason to say so.
On many occasions you can see that the information SF uses comes not from open sources, but from intelligence or diplomatic sources in Russia.
SF is not reposting some NATO sources, they have their own sources to confirm.
If you dont want to believe this, your choice, but this agreement has been reported in diplomatic circles all over the world, in NATO and anti NATO states.
Russia acts pragmatic:
It is just like with Afrin, where Putin gave the greenlight to Turkey. Back then most here did not believe it either, but still it was confirmed afterwards.
It is actually only logically.
Putin has to give Erdogan something to save face. And Putin always does give his partners or even enemys the chance to save face, as it prevents escalation.
The game plan here seems to be just like i posted yesterday, before this so called “news” came out:
Free Idlib, let Erdogan save face domestically, pressure the Kurds into agreeing to hand over their areas to Assad in case of Turkish attack (Just like i posted days ago, when i said Kurdish delegations are in Damascus to discuss exactly this).
There are also credible reports, from countrys in NATO and against, that there is a growing understanding between Russia and US, likely between Putin and Trump (as we all hoped when Trump came into office). Meaning a concensus between Trump and Putin to prevent a Turkish occupation of Kurdish zones, likely including to prefer a return of SDF areas to Assad, if this prevents Turkey from invading those areas.
Its complex, and developing, BUT IT IS A CLEVER MOVE!
Think about it!
Details in the blog post i already posted yesterday:
Read it on M. K.Bhadrakumar’s Blog:
“Turkey faces quagmire in Syria”
https://indianpunchline.com/turkey-faces-quagmire-in-syria/
Even so, it does not seem to be the case with this article. The article presents a question posed in Turkish Government back in May! Why was this not reported until now? The article is anonymous and no mention of any sources other than the question posed. It does not even tell us what the response was.
However, we have plenty of time since to see if developments on the ground support such a secret agreement. They do not, in fact, the opposite in my opinion. This is a not so secret secret that has been largely ignored and for good reason, it does not reflect what is really happening.
SF has published good articles but also some that were ridiculous such as Zelensky implementing real change to strike a different course from Porko. That said, I have seen improvement in SF content lately and hope that this continues
You are absolutely right, and thats the problem, we all dont have out own sources in high level goverment, diplomatips, or military, intelligence to confirm.
Its about who to trust, and that is one question everyone need to asnwer for themselves.
From the track record of Mr. Bhadrakumar, i and many others in the Alt-Media community can say he is reliable, honest, and sober/neutral enough to take his words as serious, and as someone who actually has the sources in said circles to confirm this, plus the experience to judge if those sources are trustful themselves.
With SF, when they report something that goes against the narrative here, in my experience this is a sign that it has legs. They normally dont post stuff that goes against their narrative, only if it really is major.
But again, everyone needs to answer this themselves, and judge themselves.
But outright screaming “THIS CANT BE TRUE” because it goes against one’s one world view and narrative is counter productive and not a good sign for intelectual freedom for many here.
Nothing is sure, everything needs to be judge individually, and this ostrich apporach of many here helps no one.
But then again there are many like you here, who do judge themselves, and that is a good sign for this site.
IF EVERYONE THINKS ALIKE…
NO ONE IS THINKIN’….
True that!
:)
Explain a little better your point of vue, Putin gave the green light to precisely for what? The invasion of Afrin? May be you are making a little of confusion between the reality (the syrians, russians and iranians didn’t gave cover to guys refusing peremptorily let the SAA enter on their controled territories, and refusing peremptorily the use of the syrian flag) and a pretense green light that no one gave, neither the syrians, nor the russians or the iranians. By the contrary, all the three have reiterated that Afrin must return to the control of the syrian government (Erdogan even reacted against Lavrov exactly about that).
Jorge, if you remember: Before the invasion of Afrin, there was weeks of diplomatic activity. Turkey threatend to invade Afrin, and Russia and Assad made diplomatic appeals to SDF, to hand over the territory to the SAA. This would have prevented the invasion by Afrin. When the Kurds/SDF showed that they wont do this, still believing the US would help them, Russia had the understanding with Erdogan to “look the other way”. Not to support it, or see it as something good, but as a nevessary evil in the bigger picture.
In the end, Kurds gambeled and loose. US did not help them, and Assads half hearted help of sending some 100 NDF troops (NDF are locally defense forces, so they would anyway defend their areas in Afrin) did not change a thing.
In the end, this strategy by Russia made many mad here, but today we see it was effective: Now Kurds are much more receptive to not repeat this error again, come the time the Turks will try to take their areas in north Syira, as i outlined in the above and some other posts.
Before it was rumored, and later confirmed even by pro-gov outlets like Al-Masdar and SF, as well as other outlets in both alternative media and MSM in both pro and non NATO countrys.
I hate the “chess” terminoligy, but in this case it was justified. Loosing Afrin turned the perception in the Kurdish base and leadership, which let to the diplomatic reapprochment between Kurds and Assad, and will likely prevent a scenario like Afrin in the areas occupied by SDF in north Syria.
Fact 1: Syria, Russia and Iran are against the Turquish presence in Afrin, Azaaz and Al Bab, and all the three affirm that those territories of the Aleppo governorate must return to the Syrian government control.
Fact 2: Weren’t Russia and Iran that were forced, by the correlation of forces, to accept Turkey in the Astana process.
Fact 3: the syrian war was in part, and still is, a civil war (not only an international war), and that is crystal clear in the case of the kurd separatism. In a civil the most natural is to look to the other side when a civil war ennemy is atacked by someone else.
Classic operation of desinformation, nothing more
I have no knowledge if this article is true or not, but assume for the sake of argument that it is true. I can imagine there some very, super angry head choppers. And angry with whom? Well, Erdogan, the fake sultan of course, for betraying them. I can also imagine a fatwa being issued by a Mufti for his death. I would not shed a tear if this were so.
Don’t believe everything you read.
I don’t think the Russians have made a deal allowing the Turks free reign to attack the ALF [YPG] in SAA held territory, I instead think they made a deal to help Erdogan repel all the Syrian refugees he’s going to have knocking on his door pretty soon. The Russians have probably offered to help clean up his mess and absolve him from his responsibility, but only so long as he gets out of Idlib with no more demands, that’s the deal I’d believe was made between them, not the one in this article.
And I say that for 2 reasons, for one, everything the SAA has been doing lately is designed to force the terrorists and displaced people north, they have nowhere else to go, and two, why else would Erdogan have rushed 10,000 troops to the southern border a few weeks ago, they aren’t being sent there to stop people getting out are they.
I think Assad’s won the war, at least against Erdogan, so this could be the start of the end for Erdogan, if he doesn’t let the refugees into Turkey when they do arrive, it’ll mean it really is. Fingers crossed everyone, pull out the prayer beads or mat, give your offerings and burn your incense, Assad needs all the help he can get now, positive thinking only.
