During the Zapad-2021 (West-2021) military drill, the Russian Armed Forces demonstrated to their colleagues from Belarus a new helicopter “carousel” tactic, Deputy Defense Minister Yunus-Bek Yevkurov said.

According to him, at the request of the minister, new combat elements, developed as a result of experience gained in local conflicts were presented in the exercises.

“For us, this is the Syrian campaign, although irregular armed forces operated against us in it, but at the same time highly trained bandit formations. <…> And of course, both here and in Mulino – at the Zapad-2021 exercise – we use this experience. If we take combat elements, then this is a helicopter and artillery “carousel”. They are widely used in all the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, here our brothers-Belarusians are adopting this experience,” Yevkurov said.

Also, according to the Deputy Minister, during the maneuvers, they are practicing the fight against shock and reconnaissance drones.

Yevkurov noted that modern and advanced models of weapons and military equipment are tested in the Zapad-2021, new methods and forms of training are tested.

“The goal is precisely to keep our armed forces in good shape. To check their condition at these exercises, both here – in Belarus, and on the territory of the Russian Federation. At each point there are research groups that look at certain pros and cons, and we work in order to fix it or make it better, so every year our exercises are richer and more practical.”

On September 12th, Russia’s Pskov Airborne Forces conducted the first mass night airborne assault exercise during the joint strategic exercises.

According to the Ministry of Defense, more than 600 servicemen and 30 BMD-2K-AU, BMD-4M and armored personnel carriers have landed at the Strugi Red test site.

The actions of the military were coordinated with the help of modern navigation systems and night vision devices. After the gathering of personnel and the mooring of the landed military equipment, the subunits captured the field airfield and destroyed the mock enemy with the support of artillery and air defense systems.

The department clarified that more than 20 Il-76 military transport aircraft also participated in the operation. From the air, the paratroopers were covered by the crews of Su-30SM fighters and Mi-8AMTSh and Ka-50 army helicopters. At the same time, the air formation of the transport workers was controlled from the A-50U and IL-22-SURT long-range radar aircraft.

The Zapad-2021 practical exercises are held from 10 to 16 September at 14 training grounds in Russia, in the Baltic Sea, as well as in Belarus.

In total, up to 200 thousand servicemen, about 80 military aircraft and helicopters, up to 760 units of military equipment – including 290 battle tanks, 240 guns, multiple launch rocket systems and mortars, as well as up to 15 warships are taking part in the exercises.
