Russia Has Advantage Over US In Three Key Military Areas

Russia Has Advantage Over US In Three Key Military Areas

The National Interest published an article, in which the US analysts admitted that there are three key areas where Russia either already has or is starting to gain an advantage over US. According to Lisa Sawyer Samp, a senior fellow at CSIS’ International Security Program, the US capability gap with regard to Russia is real, although it is regionally focused in Central and Eastern Europe.

The three key areas where Russia is advantageous are the combined arms warfare, cyber and electronic warfare, and A2/AD. A2/AD stands for Anti-Access/Area Denial, a system dedicated to prevent an adversary from occupying or traversing an area of land, sea or air, usually endangering them

According to experts, the United States has the right tools to take on Russian A2/AD zones in the European theatre, but it does not have enough capacity to take on Moscow’s new bastions head-on.

The US military is overly reliant on air power to defeat those emerging threats, according to retired US Air Force General Philip Breedlove, former commander of US European Command.

“We have the tools, but we do not have nearly enough of them—and the speed that we would need to eliminate these A2/AD bubbles—to be able to deploy our forces is going to be controlled by the depth of the bench of how we can attack those A2/AD forces. Right now, we’re almost completely dependent on air forces and aviation assets in order to attack the A2/AD problem.”

The article cites Evelyn Farkas, who until recently served as the deputy assistant secretary of defense for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia. She said that although Moscow spends less money overall on defense than the US, it modernizes its forces in a very strategic way. “It’s not as if they’re modernizing across the board,” Farkas said. “But they’re doing it in a very clever way, and so they’re increasing their capabilities in certain key conventional areas…cruise missiles, the air defense systems etc. Which are causing quite a problem for us.”

In terms of cost deterrence (making the cost unaffordable to the enemy) is probably an order of magnitude cheaper that any offensive strategy.

TiredOfBsToo

“Which are causing quite a problem for us.”

May they keep on causing a problem for the Department of Offense for evermore. It’s the only way the planet will know peace and safety from a moronic psychopathic grouping.

Rodger

“the United States has the right tools to take on Russian A2/AD zones in the European theatre” Do they mean the European part of Russia or Greece and Denmark? They probably mean Greece and Denmark.

Rodger

“She said that although Moscow spends less money overall on defense than the US” Yeah, about 10% of what the US spends (or about the same as Saudi Arabia does :’) ). But keep building those carriers.

chris chuba

I’m certain that Russia has already thought of this since they already network their S3/400 radar, but I wonder if they already network low frequency radar at different phases to provide accurate targeting for stealth aircraft?

I’ve read posts on U.S. boards that deride low frequency radar because it only has the resolution to get within 1,000m of the aircraft (don’t know if that’s true but let’s assume that it is). If you have 4 radars networked at different phases, that gets you close to 100m. This might be one of the reasons why they are not rushing to get their Su-57 out of the door, they see stealth as a secondary technology but just want to keep one foot in that door.

EmilyEnso

. Right now, we’re almost completely dependent on air forces and aviation assets in order to attack the A2/AD problem.”

I trust he is not including the F35.
We now know a couple of storks can bring one down.
The Russians will bring them down like flies.

Attrition47

I heard that they were vulnerable to soda siphons too.

Nexusfast123

Rain, electrical storms and even their own over engineered logistics support system.

FlorianGeyer

That will be fun to watch :)

Solomon Krupacek

russians never were able to do, what you write

Garga

As Emily wrote, Russians can do that easily, by breeding Storks. There’s no need for SAMs or advanced tech.
This dude has a cool name, Breedlove. The Russians can hire general BreedStork to do the job.

PS. If I poke you in the eye, will you say something really funny?

Solomon Krupacek

yes, i heard during cold war the same stupudity, and then the russians silently lost it.

Justin

hahaha, the F-35, what a joke that is!
The US had so much money, they didn’t know where or what to upgrade or create!
Meanwhile Russia has the best Subs (stealth) the best rockets / missiles, the best anti air, the best Electronic warfare!
I love these techs because they are capable of shutting down any force, even if they have over whelming numbers! Then they just become sitting ducks!
Russia has a defensive budget strategy which means they don’t need to spend so much in order to keep 10 or more air craft carriers running.
Their soldiers are cheaper, their labour to produce is cheaper! So of course they can compete against the US!
There is no doubts that the US is going down fast. Once that petro dollar is unpegged from the reserve currency, its game over!

goingbrokes

Was thinking the same. Aerial dominance depending on F35 is an oxymoron. 85% of the stock will be in maintenance during active operations.

Nexusfast123

That is if the logistics system does not ground them all.

Southern Cross

It sounds as though you could actually call the F35 a Russian asset now.

EmilyEnso

Excellent thought.
Could be.
Sounds a great description to me.
Wasting billions in fake money.
A couple of birds can bring it down.
It occasionally kills its pilot.
Seems like Gods gift to the Russian Federation.
A reward for the only country caring for and rescuing christians across the Middle East?
Who knows.

AMHants

Russia, don’t they spend $65 billion a year on defence, but, have they dropped it down to $45 billion?

The US spends $650 billion on defence and it will soon be rising to $700 billion. Yet, Russia has the most powerful military. The US has the largest and most expensive, but, not the most powerful.

Don’t they have accountants in the UK that can work out cost and efficiency?

FlorianGeyer

” Don’t they have accountants in the UK that can work out cost and efficiency? ”

When we see aircraft carriers without aircraft for years and the ones chosen that need circa 40 hours maintenance for every hour of flight, plus armoured troop carriers that cost about £250,000 each ,yet still do not work well in hot climates, it is apparent that as for most things in the UK, buggerall really works as it should and that that does is over priced :)

AMHants

I should have said the US. Even though as you say, we have the same problem in the UK.

Our old carriers, each had a multi-million $ refit, before being sent to the Turkish scrapyards. No doubt now tins lined up, on a John Kerry family member’s conveyor belt, waiting for a dollop of baked beans. The two that are in build at the moment, and have not been handed over to the Navy, well look at how much they have cost and what they do and do not include. Including the F35s.

Wasn’t it the Type 45 Destroyers that could not cope with warm water and a lot more. Reminds me of UK railways, and not being able to function, owing to whatever the weather was upto. Aren’t they trying to flog the troop carriers, under 2 decades in age, because the Navy cannot afford them or have enough sailors to man them?

Frane Frlan

Surely, UK is doing some accounting for US. That’s the reason for Brexit. ;)

AMHants

The reason for BREXIT is purely to keep the City of London safe. No doubt we will end up paying double what we are paying now, to stay out of the EU, knowing our politicians.

ooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh buggy buggy

John Brown

You forgot to put Israel at the top, the only country with no defined borders

FlorianGeyer

Perhaps the British Government should privatise the armed forces ? The proceeds from that would be a boost to the UK finances and any combat deaths ignored :)

AMHants

Think they have plans to do that. The US is also thinking along those lines, as stated by Eric Prince, who happily provided the Blackwater Mercenaries.

Eric Prince on “Fixing” Afghanistan — His Private Army — Your Tax Dollars… https://medium.com/@Smalltofeds/eric-prince-on-fixing-afghanistan-his-private-army-your-tax-dollars-bd0779e2c546

They will still expect to be State Funded, with failed politicians in charge and feeding from the tax payer funded trough.

FlorianGeyer

It would negate the need for the historic ‘Officer Class’ and Regimental System and indeed any national identity of recruits. Such a privatised military would likely recruit from nations with a ‘hungry workforce’. This of course would be Orgasmic for the One World Order freaks as they would have no empathy with the host nation that is forced via taxation,to pay them.

A gift from the God of Mamon :)

Solomon Krupacek

uk is now nobody. us is 5 classes higher.

FlorianGeyer

Who cares? I certainly do not :)

Joe Kerr

The U.S. is bankrupt, with Trump trampsing the globe begging for cash.

Frane Frlan

The United States had a market share of 33 percent in international arms exports between 2012 and 2016. Market is rising and it is close to $1900 billion right now.
Market share means political, economy and other areas of interests domination , and US have that domination, which is now in jeopardy by the market share of Russia (23%) .

Solomon Krupacek

$390 billion just on nuclear program, and another $100 billion on anti missile defence.

but not yearly!

Joe Kerr

And a $20 trillion debt that’s unpayable, with its economy bankrupted by a string of wars for lies, mostly for the tribe.

Solomon Krupacek

65 x 10 to power 9 is not enough for strong army for russia. this is only bullshit propaganda. the same, what we used to hear from ussr.
be sure, theyanks are much, much stronger then russians. yanks pay only for fuel 100 milliard usd. that means, continuously exercise. compare the hours of russian and us yoldiers spent for trainings. in allcase yanks are several times better. training. russia has not money for night vision technique for all troops. yanks train also during daylight vic night vision systems. russian army has no chance in conventional combat, even in situation, when they would be 1:1 in manpower and techique.

Give me those facts kind sir

Google what? You mean “crying IDF troops 2006”?

Really?

Now what do they get for $65 billion? Besides weapons and equipment that works and enough to have the 2nd largest military, with the most powerful army?

Let us have a look at the superior training that the US receives.

USS John McCain and USS Fitzgerald – Navy Releases Collision Report for USS Fitzgerald and USS John S McCain Collisions… USS FITZGERALD

The collision between Fitzgerald and Crystal was avoidable and resulted from an accumulation of smaller errors over time, ultimately resulting in a lack of adherence to sound navigational practices. Specifically, Fitzgerald’s watch teams disregarded established norms of basic contact management and, more importantly, leadership failed to adhere to well-established protocols put in place to prevent collisions. In addition, the ship’s triad was absent during an evolution where their experience, guidance and example would have greatly benefited the ship.

USS JOHN S. MCCAIN

The collision between John S. McCain and Alnic MC was also avoidable and resulted primarily from complacency, over-confidence and lack of procedural compliance. A major contributing factor to the collision was sub-standard level of knowledge regarding the operation of the ship control console. In particular, McCain’s commanding officer disregarded recommendations from his executive officer, navigator and senior watch officer to set sea and anchor watch teams in a timely fashion to ensure the safe and effective operation of the ship. With regard to procedures, no one on the Bridge watch team, to include the commanding officer and executive officer, were properly trained on how to correctly operate the ship control console during a steering casualty.

John Helmer: What The USS Donald Cook and Polish Navy Were Doing Off Kaliningrad When They Were Buzzed By the Russian Air Force

What happened to the same ship, in the Black Sea, when it met the Russian Military Jets and when it met Bastion?

What happened to the USS Theodore Roosevelt in the Baltic Sea?

Terrified US Aircraft Carrier Flees From Russian Subs To UK Safety… http://blog.chinadaily.com.cn/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=1404009

How much did the F35 cost and did it come in on time?
Then you have the exploding generators on the USS Gerald Ford, the USS Zumwalt, that everybody can sea, well, apart from the local fishermen and merchant vessels, out in the deep blue sea. Shall we move onto the Littoral and why the US Navy overhauls troubled littoral combat ship program? Or shall we move forward to the $40 billion, missile defence system, that spent almost two decades trying to get into active service, and now it has reached active service, well it is obsolete, is it not?

i am laughin at your shitty efforts :DDDD

Alexandra

And what is your bloody effort? Google? TROLL ALERT!!!!!!!

AMHants

Keep laughing. As others can read the links and the comments and make up their own, independent minds, with regards who to laugh at.

Alexandra

Are you a troll? You sure sound like one. Haven’t you read in the papers lately that the US army is willing to recruit drug addicts, people with mental issues, people with criminal records? Is that what is going to make them strong? Yeah, they need all the training they can get, and they are still going to lose big time.

Solomon Krupacek

as former officer i tell you, why have rusians fear to attack israeli airplanes.

Joe Kerr

As an arms professional I tell you that Israel fears the Iskander missile, as without any bases left, IDF flyers will be pot targets for anyone. But I guess you already knew that, assuming you read Israeli news.

Solomon Krupacek

:)))))))))))))))))))

Laszlo

in which army? or somewhere else? police?

Alexandra

The Russian official stated mission was to destroy ISIS not fight the Israelis. If you say you’re a former officer, you should have a better understanding of the military mission.

Solomon Krupacek

sorry whore, but IF one contry attacks MY ally, then i help him. especially, if this allied country is already under attack and i am ivolved.

so, putin simply cock, coward and traitor.

PZIVJ

Alexandra: “Haven’t you read in the papers lately”
Surely you must be more intelligent than this, or maybe not. :(

Alexandra

When I was in university, all my professors in Political Sciences told their students to read as many newspapers as possible to get a better picture of whatever was described – so reading both the MSM and the alternative news sources (Chinese, French, Russian, American, Canadian (both French Québecois and English)) gives me a better understanding of events (and I can read them in 3 languages). How about you?

PZIVJ

Reading and hearing multiple news sources is a valid point.
My argument is that your original post is BS.
What is the news link for your claim?

Bru

They are so mentally ill as they always call “a threat” any country capable of defending itself against an aggression by the US regime…

John Whitehot

“But they’re doing it in a very clever way, and so they’re increasing their capabilities in certain key conventional areas…cruise missiles, the air defense systems etc. Which are causing quite a problem for us”

that’s because they see the armed forces as a mean to protect the country, and not as one to keep in place a caste of murderers and rob trillions from the US people.

Politolog Externista

surname Farkas means wolf in Hungarian btw.

cwg13

Last time I spent looking into the U.S. military I found that the U.S. can destroy China’s air defences in about 45 min. the U.S.S.R’S in about 18 hrs. Then pick off at will any targets they want. The U.S. can deliver a nuclear device any where in the world in about 13 min.

Nuff said bitchezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Joe Kerr

Yeah, and 20 mins later the U.S. is nuked into history, with your azz as well.

cwg13

Sniffles you hurt my fewwings the agaonyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

cwg13

Bitch !

cwg13

Uh………… U.S.S.R has how many aircraft carriers ???????????? LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Joe Kerr

U.S carriers? Good target practice for DF21s. Bring it on.

PZIVJ

But only 3 US carrier groups active on world oceans? And Russia is land based defensive in nature. You need to crunch the numbers again. :D

Nigel Maund

The Zionist – Anglo – American Cabal (ZAAC) is the most evil force the world has seen since Nazi Germany. Anything that deminishes their ability to take out Russia has to be good. If the ZAAC were to be able to defeat Russia they would achieve their goal of Global Hegemony and control with their evil New World Order Facist Dictatorship over the entire planet. All that stands between them and their globalist goals are Russia, Syria, Iran and China. Hence, these countries are the humanities only hope of liberty and freedom. One day the ZAAC will have to be defeated and wiped out if humanity is to have any hope for the future. However. like ancient Rome, the Cabal may destroy itself internally due to massive scale of its evil and corruption and this is the hope. The most liekly way this may happen will be when its economy implodes and its social cohesion disintegrates into revolution and mayhem and major regime change.

Joe Kerr

With its population dumbed down by junk food and reality tv, it’s no wonder that the USAF is 2000 pilots short, its F-35s grounded because of “technical issues” and the navy’s new $4 billion Zumwalt towed back to port after breaking down in the Panama Canal on its maiden trip. Not to mention collisions with cargo ships in the SC Sea.

Joe Kerr

Largely irrelevant. With Russia, the U.S. and China each having the capacity to nuke one another into the ether, WW3 is a media hyped non-starter. The new game is finance and in that the U.S. is history, being bankrupted by a continual stream of wars for lies. Asian countries are turning to China for the simple reason that it has cash to invest, the U.S. doesn’t. Turkey, a NATO member, is buying Russia’s S-400 because it knows it’s better than the junk from the U.S.
