Right-Wing Wave. Eurobureaucracy Tries To Stop The Growth Of Opposition Through Repression

Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party

A right-wing wave is rising again in Europe. It is not only sweeping the European Union, but also Great Britain. On May 1, the United Kingdom held municipal elections. The results shook the country’s political landscape. Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party won, significantly outpacing its rivals, the Conservative and Labour parties. Mr. Farage’s political force gained 30% of the votes and 677 seats in the municipal authorities. The number of right-wing British deputies increased fivefold.

Unexpectedly, the Liberal Democrats took second place, despite having been prophesied a deep crisis a few years ago. The Liberal Democrats won 370 seats and 17% of the vote. The Conservatives won 319 seats and 15% of the vote (a loss of 674 seats and 10% of the vote). Labour won 98 seats and 20% of the vote (a loss of 187 seats and 14% of the vote). The Greens won 79 seats and 11% of the vote (a gain of 44 seats). Regionally, the situation is extremely interesting. In County Durham, the heart of the coal industry, the Reform Party won 53 seats, while the Labour Party won only four. For context, the Labour Party had dominated this area undividedly for a hundred years. Until 2021, the Socialists determined county politics, backed by miners and left-wing trade unions.

British Trumpists are not only supported by ordinary working people, but also by wealthy individuals. For example, here are the voting results in the county of Staffordshire. It traditionally votes for the Conservative Party, which defends the interests of the upper class. Now, however, the Tories have literally been thrown out of the county. Reformists took 39 seats, the Conservatives took 10, and the Labour Party took zero (which was already predictable). The Conservative electorate is being eroded by British Trumpists and Liberal Democrats. The right wing of the Tories is unhappy with their prime ministers’ pro-migrant policies, which betray their own electorate. David Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, and Rishi Sunak have all allowed migrants to enter the UK. Those who are unhappy with the lack of opposition to the “right-wing bias” are switching to the Liberal Democrats.

In the by-election for the House of Commons in the Runcorn and Helsby constituency, Reform UK beat Labour by six votes to take the top spot. This constituency has always been considered a stronghold for socialists. Last year, the Labour Party won 60% of the popular vote there. Now, it’s only 38%. The Reform Party has its first mayor: Andrea Jenkins, a defector from the Conservatives.

Andrea Jenkins

Jenkins will lead Lincolnshire, a county with a population of 674,000. 96% of the county’s population is white and British. It is therefore not surprising that they voted for British Trumpists.

Reform UK controls ten out of twenty-four councils in total. While this does not change anything dramatically, it does provide an indication of what lies ahead for the UK in 2029. That is when the next parliamentary elections are scheduled. The reformists will approach them as mobilized as possible. Early elections cannot be ruled out, given Keir Starmer and his cabinet’s record-low ratings. Trumpist ideology, having conquered the United States, is beginning to expand into Europe. Unsurprisingly, the British were the first to follow the Americans’ example. Next year, the United Kingdom will hold even larger municipal elections. Nigel Farage’s supporters are expected to strengthen their position.

Left-liberal globalists are rapidly losing ground. Right-wing opposition has risen in all parts of Europe. In response, the Eurobureaucracy in Brussels is implementing repressive measures. In March 2025, a Paris court convicted National Rally leader Marine Le Pen for allegedly making fictitious hires in the European Parliament. This closes the possibility of the French politician running in the 2027 presidential election. Supporters of Emmanuel Macron are preparing for the upcoming elections and trying to clear political space for the incumbent president’s successor. Commenting on this, Donald Trump compared the actions of the French judicial authorities to the lawlessness the Biden administration permitted.

The German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution recently recognized the leading party, Alternative for Germany, as extremist.

Alternative for Germany

The political party, which has 152 members in parliament, was blacklisted. The increased pressure on the party clearly correlates with its growing popularity. According to a late April Forsa opinion poll, the Alternative for Germany party came out on top in terms of popularity (26%), overtaking the Christian Democrats (24%) and the Social Democrats (14%). The party scored 4.7% in the 2013 parliamentary elections, 12.6% in 2017, and 10.4% in 2021. These electoral results frighten the authorities of the Federal Republic. This is why the process of banning the political party has begun. Recognizing the party as “extremist” prevents the right from forming alliances at the regional or national level. Additionally, German intelligence services can now monitor phone calls, observe party events, and recruit informants.

The Romanian presidential election was another setback for the EU. The removal of Calin Georgescu, the favorite in the election, dispelled the myth of European democracy. However, even such a repressive act does not seem to help Brussels in the Romanian case. In the first round of reelections, George Simion of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians movement won a landslide victory. He has the support of 41% of the electorate. This is not enough to win in the first round, so a second round will be held on May 18. Simion’s closest rival is Nicusor Dan, the pro-European mayor of Bucharest, who received 21% of the vote. In third place is Crin Antonescu, a social democrat and supporter of the current pro-NATO government.

Simion is not as radical as Georgescu, which is why he has not yet been removed from the election. The EU does not want any conservatives, even moderate ones, in power in Bucharest. Mr. Simion is a Donald Trump supporter. Simion showed solidarity with Georgescu during last year’s struggle.

“If the Romanian people want it, there are several ways in which Mr. Georgescu can take a leadership position, and we will use them,” said the right-wing candidate at a polling station, accompanied by a politician suspended by the Constitutional Court.

Repression can produce short-term results. Yet they cannot preserve the current political systems of the European Union and the United Kingdom. The conservative revolution that began in the United States with Donald Trump’s election has finally reached Europe. There are two paths the Eurobureaucracy can take. The first is to continue the pressure, which could lead to a social explosion similar to that of 1917–1923. The second is to allow fair competition and offer a workable alternative program. Unfortunately, it appears that Brussels does not intend to relinquish its “whip.” This bodes poorly for the European Union as an integration union.
