Iran carried out three strikes against U.S. forces in the week before its July 17 attack that killed two American soldiers and left one service member missing in Jordan, The New York Times reported on July 20.
U.S. officials told the Times that those earlier strikes wounded dozens of American service members and damaged several helicopters.
The Pentagon did not disclose these earlier Iranian strikes or the casualties and damage caused by them, according to the report.
The Times did not clarify where these losses took place. However, Iranian media released satellite images showing heavy damage at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base.
Muwaffaq Salti, located near the city of Azraq in eastern Jordan, has hosted fighter jets and drones since 2013 under a defense agreement with Amman. Its distance from Iran, yet proximity to Iraq and Syria, has made it a strategically valuable staging point for U.S. operations against the Islamic Republic.
The satellite images released by Iranian media show damage at the air base, including destroyed MQ-9 Reaper combat drones, a devastated officer housing block, and a burned-out fighter jet hangar.
In a statement on July 18, Central Command said four American service members wounded in the July 17 attack were taken to Jordanian hospitals and had been discharged. More American troops received minor injuries and returned to duty, the statement said, but it did not specify how many.
The commander later said in a statement on July 20 that unidentified remains were found at the site of the attack, adding that the examination process to verify the remains is ongoing.
Iranian strikes on Jordan have become more effective in recent days, which indicates that U.S. air defenses there have been severely damaged, depleted, or both.
The ongoing limited confrontation between the U.S. and Iran, which began on July 7, is slowly spinning out of control. The memorandum of understanding signed by the two sides last month to end the war has collapsed, and a wider regional conflict may be just a few days away.
The Pentagon’s decision to withhold information about the losses in Jordan indicates that the U.S. may be planning to escalate further.

the american soldier, sailor, marine and airmen have had 25 years in there anointed war on terror to learn from their mistakes by picking up the copy of the ucmj they use as a door stop to read and comprehend it. as an american taxpayer i have absolutely no shame in saying that they deserve everything they are getting in their contribution to the worst war crimes of this century as well as the last century given the atomic age “we the people” ushered in!…
i remember hearing about the war crimes in sarajevo in the 90s and the people i knew in the military who chose jail rather than keep committing the atrocities they were ordered to follow. the revolt against the chain of command should have started in earnest when 3 building 2 planes was understood, and yet they kept ignoring the truth when they knew the truth and didn’t care because they could get away with it. well… not anymore!
