Russian President Vladimir Putin on September 5 ordered a three-day suspension of strikes on the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv starting at midnight, as United States envoys initiate high-stakes diplomatic talks in Moscow.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the Russian news agency TASS that the temporary halt in attacks is directly tied to a peace mission led by U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
Peskov noted that Ukrainian media outlets have similarly reported that Ukrainian forces will observe a ceasefire from midnight through September 8.
“Russian President Putin, the supreme commander-in-chief, has ordered a three-day suspension of strikes on Kiev starting at midnight today,” Peskov told TASS. “This has to do with the Americans’ consultations that are being prepared and will be held in Kiev.”
Witkoff, a U.S. special presidential envoy, and Kushner arrived at Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport earlier in the day, where they were greeted by Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund. The delegation is expected to hold consultations with Putin before traveling onward to Kyiv for discussions with Ukrainian officials.
Addressing the mission, U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House that Washington’s “shuttle diplomacy” could create conditions for resolving the conflict, adding that the U.S. has a concrete vision of what peace agreements between Russia and Ukraine could look like.
Putin told reporters earlier that the U.S. negotiators were “always welcome in Russia” and that Moscow was pleased to work with them.
Beyond the capital, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced that a localized ceasefire brokered by the agency has taken effect at Russia’s Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi announced that Ukrainian technicians will cross into the area to repair the critical 330-kilovolt Ferosplavnaya-1 off-site power line after local demining is completed. The plant lost its sole remaining power line on August 20 and has been relying on backup diesel generators to cool its six reactors.
“The plant is now running low on diesel fuel reserves and faces a possible station blackout within days unless off-site power is restored,” Grossi said in a statement, adding that both sides had engaged constructively with the IAEA to secure the site.
The simultaneous pause in strikes around Kyiv and technical cooperation at Zaporizhzhia demonstrate a rare operational coordination engineered to give U.S. negotiators a quiet window on the ground.
While the temporary lulls reduce immediate risks, translating a three-day atmospheric pause into a concrete political framework remains an uphill task given the complexity of the situation, especially considering the recent escalation by Ukraine.

putin is wise and patient and will tolerate the two invaders and pause deep strikes for a moment. the battlefield remains. any surrender agreements made by whitcoff and kushner will not be internationally recognized. russia will have many demands. if executive orders, ending all sanctions and the eu’s return of stolen russian funds are not completed in the next 24 hours. then pandora’s box awaits.
russia and the worlds greatest enemy is the cia / corporate control of media and its endless propaganda efforts. this must be addressed in the beginning.
