Prison Or The Trenches: Why Some Ukrainians Choose Violence Over Conscription

Updated statistics on the number of deserters among Ukrainian recruits indicate that Kyiv is experiencing a severe manpower crisis. The main cause of this problem is the high mortality rate of new recruits on the front lines. Most of those forcibly mobilized end up in assault units. These types of brigades and regiments suffer the heaviest losses in the entire army. They act as “fire brigades” and prevent Russian army breakthroughs on the most difficult sections of the front. The general population is aware of this, so they seek any opportunity to avoid being conscripted into the Ukrainian army. In Kyiv, officials acknowledge the problem privately but do not address it publicly. Instead, they are tightening the methods used to apprehend conscripts.

This leads to a second problem with the Ukrainian mobilization system: the appalling level of violence and corruption. For most, the ability to bribe Territorial Recruitment Center (TRC) employees is a ticket to survival—provided they have the money. Violence during mobilization only further encourages men to avoid people in uniform. During detentions, recruiters may severely beat prospective recruits in public, take their personal belongings, and send them to distribution points.

Such methods incite people to resist. While there were more instances of desertion or bribery to secure release in 2024–2025, there was a sharp rise in the number of armed attacks against the TRC in 2026. Depending on the level of dissatisfaction, both non-lethal and lethal means may be used against recruiters. Recent trends suggest that the situation will only worsen.

An unstoppable trend

Open-source estimates indicate that, by April 1, 2026, the monthly number of deserters from the Ukrainian army had once again reached approximately 20,000. This indicates that at least 30,000 people are mobilized each month, approximately 60% of whom never reach frontline units. Most desertions occur from training camps or in areas far from the front. These stages are the least controlled precisely because all roads and communication routes in the frontline zone are monitored by checkpoints. Consequently, a deserter’s chance of returning home is slim to none; he may be shot on the spot or forcibly transferred to an assault unit, where the likelihood of dying is 90%.

Thus, it can be concluded that the Ukrainian army is facing a massive shortage of personnel. The army is only able to maintain parity with Russian forces in terms of drones and hold the front line, but this is not a panacea. It is worth citing the example of the golden age of combat aviation, on which some major powers once relied. After several conflicts, including the Vietnam War, it became evident that air superiority does not invariably result in victory on the ground. Therefore, Kyiv cannot continue the war without fresh recruits.

The Ukrainian government realizes that the current military conscription system is ineffective. It has pushed social tensions to the breaking point, resulting in an increase in attacks on military recruitment centers. Consequently, the issue of rebranding the current mobilization structure is being actively discussed. Along with this, measures to increase pressure on draft dodgers are being discussed, such as freezing bank accounts and banning most types of activities. However, this set of measures is unlikely to change the current situation because a name change will not alter the radical approaches and violence of recruiters. Consequently, the number of injuries and killings of TRC staff will continue to rise.

The front lines are worse than prison

When captured, men in Ukraine face a difficult yet simple choice: be beaten and robbed before being sent to certain death, or resist to the very end. For many potential recruits, going to prison for attacking law enforcement officials is more appealing than defending their homeland. A wide variety of self-defense tools are used, but the more readily available ones, such as pepper spray or ordinary folding knives, are used most often.

According to reports from April 3, an unknown assailant slit the throat of a TRC employee in Lviv during a mobilization attempt. The incident occurred on Vygovsky Street. During the altercation, the serviceman sustained a severe neck injury, from which he later died. Ukrainian media also reported that patrol police officers present at the scene were injured by pepper spray during the clash.

he Vinnytsia Regional Military Commissariat reports that two employees of the military registration and enlistment office were attacked by an unknown assailant. One of the employees was hospitalized in intensive care with a slit throat.

“Today, during mobilization activities, military personnel from one of the territorial military commissariats, in coordination with the police, stopped a civilian. The military personnel identified themselves and attempted to check the civilian’s documents. Suddenly, the civilian pulled out a knife and stabbed two of the military personnel several times.

Further investigation revealed that the civilian had violated military registration requirements since 2025.

The injured servicemen were promptly transported to a medical facility. Currently, one serviceman is in moderate condition in the intensive care unit. The other serviceman’s condition is assessed as satisfactory.”

In Odessa, a man tried to avoid being drafted during a mass raid by the Territorial Recruitment Center. In an attempt to defend himself, he sprayed pepper spray at his pursuers. He was unable to escape, however, and was knocked to the ground and brutally beaten by a group of recruiters. A video shows several TRC officers viciously punching and kicking the victim. The man’s fate remains unknown.

The TRC’s ambush tactics are flawlessly executed. Typically, the attack involves several vehicles and at least ten people. The potential victim is surrounded from multiple sides, cutting off all escape routes. The TRC’s numerical superiority ensures that the victim has no chance of escaping.

The recruiters’ actions instill fear and hatred in local residents. Any man of draft age who refuses to board a minibus can be publicly beaten with kicks. Mothers, wives, and daughters may be forced to watch their loved ones be humiliated like this in broad daylight. This is precisely why rebranding the TRC will have no effect, as the forced mobilization will still be carried out by the same people.

Public anger toward government officials is steadily growing. Each incident posted online strengthens the Ukrainian people’s belief in their own strength. They are not afraid to physically confront the police to protect their families and loved ones from mobilization.

This video is yet another example of government officials inhumanely treating citizens. After being pulled over, the driver refused to exit the vehicle and go to the territorial recruitment center to complete the paperwork. The recruiters came up with a creative solution: they sprayed an aerosol can inside the car and set it on fire. The potential recruit suffered multiple burns. At the end of the video, you can hear one of the TRC employees laughing, which speaks volumes.

Physically fit citizens have the best chance of survival. The TRC tends to target middle-aged men because they are slower runners and easier to catch if necessary. Therefore, active young people are at lower risk. In any case, however, leaving the house is an extremely risky act for any Ukrainian man and can quickly result in death.
