President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov died in intensive care on September 2 after suffering a stroke, the country’s government and parliament reported on Friday.

Karimov’s daughter, Lola Karimova-Tillyaeva, also announced the death of her father on her page on the Instagram social network.

On Friday morning, the country’s official media reported about a critical condition of the head of the state. Later, the Reuters news agency reported about the president’s death, citing its own sources close to the situation.

Earlier on Monday, the Fergana news agency reported about the death of the Uzbek President. However, Tashkent denied this information.

A funeral of the head of the state will be held in Karimov’s hometown, Samarkand, on September 3. Commission on funeral arrangements has been headed by Uzbek Prime Minister Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

It also was reported that three days mourning will be announced in Uzbekistan on September 3.

According to experts, as of today, the most likely successor to the president is current Prime Minister of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, who has been holding the office for the past 13 years.
