Poland showcased for the first time the PLargonia, a drone with design nearly identical to that of Iran’s Shahed, at the 33rd International Defence Industry Exhibition (MSPO) that opened its doors in Kielce on September 2.

The drone was developed by the Polish Air Force Institute of Technology. Two distinct versions were presented: the AT variant, developed as an aerial target drone for training, and an OWA, or one-way attack, variant designed to carry a warhead.

The PLargonia has a wingspan of 2.8 meters and a maximum takeoff weight of approximately 50 kilograms. The drone is powered by a 28 cm³ two-stroke engine producing 3.5 horsepower, equivalent to about 2.5 kilowatts. Its cruising speed is 155 kilometers per hour, with a maximum range of 900 kilometers. The OWA version can be armed with a warhead weighing between 16 and 20 kilograms.

While media reports compared the PLargonia to the Shahed-136, the drone is in fact more comparable in size and performance to the smaller Shahed-131, which also has the same delta-wing design.

Shahid-131 and Shahed-136 drones proved its worth during multiple conflicts in the Middle East. Russian Geran-1 and Geran-2 suicide drones, which are reported to be based on the Shahed-131 and Shahed-136, were also proven to be a gamechanger during the special military operation in Ukraine.

In fact, the PLargonia name refers to “Pelargonium”, the genus of flowering plants that includes the geranium, which can be translated into Russian as Geran.

Poland was most likely able to develop the PLargonia based on examples of Geran-1 and Geran-2 drones provided by Ukraine.

It’s worth noting that the U.S. had already showcased two copies of Shahed\Geran drones: the MQM-172 Arrowhead developed by Griffon Aerospace and the Low-Cost Uncrewed Combat Attack System (LUCAS) developed by SpektreWorks. The success of the Iranian and Russian drones will likely encourage other countries to make their own copies. It is unclear, however, if they will be as effective as the originals.
