The weekend brought no respite for Ukraine — on the front lines or in the power grid. Recent strikes on energy substations have knocked out virtually the entire southern energy hub of the country, while simultaneously severing the power bridge connecting southern Ukraine to Moldova and Romania. The timing is deliberate: as autumn approaches and the heating season draws closer, disabling the infrastructure that links Ukraine to its western energy partners compounds the damage done to ports, fuel networks, and rail corridors over the preceding weeks.
The energy crisis in the rear and the ground offensive at the front are components of the same design. Nowhere is that more visible than in Kharkiv Region, where Russian forces spent the weekend methodically tightening a developing encirclement.
On August 7, Russian troops seized a border crossing south of the Russian village of Zhuravlevka along with surrounding territory. The same day, combined assault units of the 34th Brigade and 11th Tank Regiment took the village of Anishchyne, while forward elements of the 126th Regiment established control over Ivanivka on the opposite side of the emerging bottleneck. The gap between Russian positions on either side of the corridor now stands at approximately 13 kilometers. In a drone-saturated battlefield, that distance is enough to make movement through the narrow strip effectively untenable for Ukrainian units. The encircled grouping is already experiencing serious supply disruptions. A breakout attempt by elements of Ukraine’s 425th Assault Regiment was destroyed, with survivors captured. Interrogations of prisoners revealed that foreign fighters from Brazil and Spain are also trapped inside the Volchansk pocket.
On the Slavyansk axis, the main development came in the southern sector, where units of the Russian “Center” grouping consolidated their hold on Torezkoe, southwest of Druzhkivka. Assault units are also pushing forward in Oleksievo-Druzhkivka, though a full breach of Ukrainian defenses there has not yet materialized.
In Zaporizhzhia Region, the most active fighting is centered on Stepnogorsk. Ukrainian forces launched a counterattack along the Dnipro River and seized the settlement of Prymorske, pushing Russian troops back across a bridge to the far side of a ravine, which now serves as a natural defensive line. Stepnogorsk itself remains a gray zone, with neither side able to establish control. East of there, however, Russian forces achieved a clear success: on August 8, Ukrainian units abandoned their positions near Shcherbaky and fell back to fortified lines at Novoyakovlivka. The encirclement ring around Orekhov is slowly but unmistakably tightening.
Ukraine is fighting on too many fronts with too few reserves, and the arithmetic is unforgiving. Each village lost narrows the defensive perimeter; each substation destroyed darkens the winter ahead.
