Pence, Guaidó Fail to Secure Lima Group Approval for US Military Intervention in Venezuela

Given recent statements from Guaidó and top U.S. officials – as well as the recent death threat against Maduro voiced by U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) via Twitter – it seems that if the U.S. is determined to use military means to topple Maduro, it will likely have to do so unilaterally or clandestinely.

On Sunday, the U.S.-backed and self-declared “interim president” of Venezuela, Juan Guaidó, announced that he would meet with the Lima Group on Monday to “formally propose” keeping “all options open” for the “liberation” of Venezuela. The Lima Group, composed of the U.S. and its allies and client states in the Americas, have all recognized Guaidó as the “legitimate” leader of Venezuela.

The likelihood that Guaidó would use this meeting to request U.S.-backed military intervention in Venezuela, a long-time aspiration of the Trump administration, increased substantially after the vice president of the Venezuelan government led by Nicolás Maduro, Delcy Rodríguez, announced that the government had credible information that Monday’s Lima Group meeting would approve “an international coalition” to invade Venezuela in order to topple Maduro and his Chavista government. The Lima Group meeting is also likely to result in the imposition of new sanctions targeting Venezuela, according torecent statements made by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Some members of the Lima Group, however, have already announced that they are unwilling to endorse a military response to the Venezuelan crisis. On Monday, Peru’s Vice Foreign Minister Hugo de Zela Martínez stated at the beginning of the Lima Group conference that “the use of force, in any of its forms, is unacceptable” and that “the use of force is not a solution for what’s happening in Venezuela.”

Martínez further asserted that Peru and other members of the bloc were still pushing for a negotiated solution to the crisis and would consider only further diplomatic or economic actions to increase pressure on the Maduro-led government. Ultimately, the resolution of the crisis – according to Martínez – will come only if Maduro steps down and “free, fair and just elections” follow. The European Union also echoed Martínez’s comments on Monday, stating that military intervention in Venezuela “must be avoided.”

Such resistance from the Lima Group may have been unexpected from the United States, given the bloc’s willingness to endorse Guaidó after he swore himself in last month in a move that shocked and alienated many of his political allies within the Venezuelan opposition. Given recent statements fromGuaidó and top U.S. officials – as well as the recent death threat against Maduro voiced by U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) via Twitter – it seems that if the U.S. is determined to use military means to topple Maduro, it will likely have to do so unilaterally or clandestinely.

Following the Monday meeting between Guaidó and U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, military intervention was allegedly not discussed by the pair and Pence affirmed the U.S.’ commitment to Guaidó’s parallel government and his push for “freedom” in Venezuela.

The U.S. regime-change roadmap

Recent statements made by the Russian government suggest that the U.S. is planning to go the latter route. On Friday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that the ministry had obtained evidence that “U.S. companies and their NATO allies are working on the issue of acquiring a large batch of weapons and ammunition in an Eastern European country for their subsequent transfer to Venezuelan opposition forces.” Zakharova also stated that the large planned weapons cache would include “heavy machine guns, grenade launchers, portable missile launchers and ammunition for light weapons and artillery systems.”

This revelation seems to support concerns that U.S. was seeking to follow the roadmaps of past regime-change “proxy” wars in Ukraine in Syria in order to topple Maduro’s government. As MintPress News previously noted, many of the same elements seen in the lead-up to Ukraine and Syria are also present in Venezuela — including the manufacture of a “humanitarian” justification for regime change; efforts to funnel arms and weapons into the country via its foreign borders; mass funding of the political opposition; and covert involvement of U.S. government agencies, particularly the CIA.

This is a case of the Gweedo ‘support’ being rather thin…the internal support in VZ for him is too weak as it turns out, so (external Latin American) support is being withdrawn by the ‘half-supporters’, the tipping point as it were has already been reached.

One of the good things about this mess is that the shills expose themselves. Anyone who claims Guaidó is the the real president is outing themselves as a liar and a fraud. *Coughs*Alex Jones*coughs*.

Any news organization that pushes regimen change or supportes Guaido can’t be trusted.

Marco Rubio’s political career has long been bankrolled by Neo-Con special interests:

Same for people like Saunders.

That includes CNN, NBC, ABC, Fox “news” as well as both major parties.

Of course, all American media is corrupt, it’s a prerequisite.

We’ve seen the molotov cocktails and rocks thrown at the police similar to what was done in Ukraine. The cookies are represented by the weapons masqueraded as humanitarian aid supported by the felon Elliot Abrams, who did this before in support of death squads in Nicaragua. Next up, the snipers shooting at both sides, just like in Ukraine, for the grand finale. The Empire is intent on stealing Venezuela’s resources and further impoverishing the people, as 10 years of sanctions hasn’t done enough to starve the population yet.

What is it you always will hear from the biggest violators of human rights and democracy? That they want to bring human rights and democracy to…… fill in the name of the country whose resources are to be stolen. I’ve yet to see any crying over the Yemeni people who are literally starving to death with the aid of the Saudis, US & UK and their weapons suppliers. Compare the appearance of Venezuelan protesters vs. Yemeni civilians with just skin covering their bones and tell me who really needs REAL humanitarian aid and not weapons dressed up as humanitarian aid.

Ukraine Coup, on the other hand. MUCH BETTER PREPARED by US State, over DECADES, by the ‘top people’ like Brezenski and co., Kagan and wife, along with extensive oligarch support, esp. Kolomoisky (who also bankrolls one of the current clown candidates), along with pre-coup people of the 2004 event also in places of influence, the main post-Soviet theme for the UA govt. in general being pro-EU (Nikolai Azarov, former PM, being the ONLY strong counter-force, see also refusal of candidate recognition for any TRUE opposition, e.g.. recent refusal of Ojelnik candidacy by regional UA court, this is how present situation is managed). It was ten years in the making.

VZ seems to be altogether a poorly handled (from Trump-Pompeo-Bolton perspective) ad-hoc affair that will not reach take-off velocity.

“..will not reach take-off velocity.”

I hope you’re right. These psychopaths may not be cool operators, but they can still destroy Venezuela.

Thanks for the link

a solid collection of dunces – they ought to have pointed top hats with the text ‘Ich bin ein Esel’ which they had in german schools long ago, and the meaning is ‘I am a jackass’ (as in stupid ass).

You can call me Al

= I’m a donkey….. I think it’s meaning is slightly different, but still has negative connotations and yours sounds better.

verner

in the olden times klein junge that misbehaved in class had to sit in the corner of the class room wearing a pointed hat with the text ‘ich bin ein esel’ and the meaning is quite literally
‘I am an ass’, sort of punishment for not listening or for failing to understand the simplest of arithmetics (like the dunce or esel jens holm, pretending to be the casual commentator whilst in real life he’s never ever been close to denmark and is working out of tel aviv’s recruitment office for mossad where the most stupid wins).

You can call me Al

OK, I thought it was someone who does everything you say sort of things. Sorry.

Did those bad kids have to wear pointed hats with a letter printed on, we did; D=dunce.

The American Empire looks for new ways to achieve regime-change. Present confusion over Venezuela shows disagreement over methods, not policies. The Empire is dedicated to permanent daily expansion…

Venezuela had very free and very fair elections, and the landlords and racists lost. The racists and traitors cannot win elections in Revolutionary Venezuela. Venezuelan racists can only rule Venezuela as United States satraps.

Notice how Trump and Pence each have a cheek?
Trump looks like he’s enjoying the feel more than Pence.
