The Hamas Movement and other Palestinian armed factions continue to clash with the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) near the Shifa Hospital in the northern Gaza Strip.
The IDF launched an attack on the medical complex, which is located in Gaza City, on March 18, after claiming that hundreds of Palestinian fighters, including senior commanders of Hamas, were taking shelter there.
As of March 27, clashes are still ongoing near the complex. Hamas’ military wing, Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, and the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the al-Quds Brigades, released several videos between March 25 and 27 several videos showing their fighters firing rocket-propelled grenades at IDF vehicles and targeting Israeli troops with heavy machine guns, sniper rifles and mortars close to the Shifa Hospital and in the nearby city of Beit Hanoun.
The IDF said on March 27 that 22 troops were wounded during clashes in Gaza in the last 24 hours. However, it didn’t specify how many of them sustained injuries while taking part in the attack on the Shifa Hospital. The IDF didn’t report any fetalites. This leaves the toll of Israeli soldiers killed during ground operations in Gaza at 252.
On the Palestinian side, the government media office in Gaza, run by Hamas, revealed on March 26 that at least 250 Palestinians have been killed and injured in the Israeli attack on the Shifa Hospital. Hundreds others were reprotedly captured by the IDF.
And on March 27, the health ministry in the Strip, which is also run by Hamas, said in a statement that Israeli attacks killed 76 people and injured 102 others in the last 24 hours.
“Many victims are still trapped under rubble and on the roads and rescuers are unable to reach them,” it added.
According to the ministry, the death toll from the Israeli war on Gaza has reached 32,490 with more than 74,889 others wounded. Most of the victims are reportedly women and children.
In addition to the high number of casualties, the Israeli war, now in its 173rd day, has pushed 85% of Gaza’s population into internal displacement amid acute shortages of food, clean water, and medicine, while 60% of the Strip’s infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed, according to the United Nations.
Despite this dire situation, the IDF is still preparing to attack the area of Rafah in southern Gaza where more than 1,5 Palestinains are taking shelter. Reports in Hebrew media indicate that the Israeli government could launch the attack in early April, if no agreement on the release of hostages taken during the October 7 surprise attack on Israel was reached with Hamas.
