The number of Russian strikes against Kiev forces with Lancet loitering munitions documented by Lostarmour.info, a website that tracks military losses, has reached 2,000.

The website began documenting Lancet strikes based only on visual evidence, like videos and photos, with the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine more than two years ago. The rate of documented strikes increased significantly in the last few months.

The first Lancet strike in the special military operation zone was documented by Lostarmour.info on July 20 of 2022. The number of documented strikes reached 500 on August 3 of 2023. The next milestone of 1,000 documented strikes was on January 29 of 2024.

Later on April 26, the number of documented strikes reached 1,500. A little more than two months later, on June 30, the number of Lancet strikes reached 2,000.

The ZALA Aero Group, a subsidiary of Russia’s defense giant Kalashnikov Concern that developed the Lancet, celebrated the new milestone in an official statement. The group also released video footage showing some recent strikes.

“The Russian army’s special operation was a real triumph for the loitering munitions and reconnaissance drones developed by ZALA,” the ZALA Aero Group, a subsidiary of Russia’s defense giant Kalashnikov Concern that developed the Lancet, said in a statement celebrating the new milestone.

There were only 63 documented Lancet strikes in December, compared to 141 in January, 160 in February, 178 in March, 159 in April, 303 in May and 108 during June.

According to a summary provided by Zala, Lancet strikes have so far destroyed: 255 self-propelled howitzers; 282 towed howitzers; 79 multiple rocket launchers; 195 main battle tanks; 114 infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers; 45 radars and 212 other military vehicles.

ZALA produces two versions of the loitering munition, the Izdeliye-52 with an endurance of 30 minutes and a one-kilogram warhead and the larger Izdeliye-51 that has an endurance of 40 minutes and is armed with a warhead weighting three kilograms.

The loitering munition flies towards the designated area with a GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system. After arriving in the area, the operator utilizes an onboard electro-optical system via a two-way data-link to detect, track and lock on the target. A laser-ranging system then controls the detonation of the warhead.

The small radar cross-section and minimal infrared signature of the electric-powered loitering munition makes it very difficult to detect and intercept.

So far, Ukrainian attempts to stop Lancet loitering munitions with air defense fire, electronic warfare or countermeasures have been mostly unsuccessful.

Zala continues to develop the Lancet. Recent upgrades to the loitering munition included an automated target identification system, a thermal imager for night attacks and extending the range of the larger version to be able to hit targets as far as 65 kilometers away.

2000 strikes and over ~1200 hits is very good result showing the ability to pass through aad and radio-electronic countermeasures. other drones (mini- and light uavs) have less chance to approach a target.
