On June 7, an unidentified drone bombed a road linking the southern Syrian city of Daraa with the town of Tafas to the north.

The drone, which was described by local sources as being “small” and “primitive,” dropped three munitions, reportedly modified mortar rounds, near the al-Zoubi gas station. The attack damaged the road. Nevertheless, no casualties were reported.

While some sources in Daraa claimed that the attack was carried out by the Syrian intelligence, others said that Israel was responsible.

Syrian government forces and their allies, namely Lebanon’s Hezbollah, used small armed drones before, but so do Israel, Daraa rebels and eve ISIS cells in the governorate. The purpose of the attack is still unclear.

A day earlier, the mayor of the town of Athman, also located in northern Daraa, was assassinated. He was reportedly a staunch supporter of the government.

While the situation in Daraa is far from being stable, this was the first drone attack since the governorate was captured by government forces in mid-2018. More details on the attack may surface in the upcoming few days.
