On July 3, two soldiers of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) were wounded when a Turkish drone targeted a position they were manning in the center of the town of Tell Rifaat in the northern countryside of Syria’s Aleppo.

Tell Rifaat is held by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). However, the SAA maintains a large presence in the town and its surroundings. A few units of the Russian Military Police are also deployed there.

The drone strike on the SAA position was followed by a second strike that targeted a house in the outskirt of Tell Rifaat. At the same time, the Turkish military and its proxies fired more than 50 mortars, artillery rounds and rockets at the town.

Following the Turkish strikes, a unit from the Russian Military Police inspected the position where the SAA soldiers were wounded.

The strikes came as the Turkish military and its proxies are preparing for an operation against the SDF. The Tell Rifaat and the town of Manbij to the east were both recently named by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as the main targets of any new operation in Syria.

Just a day earlier, Turkish-backed militants deployed large reinforcements, including dozens of truck-mounted heavy machine guns, armored vehicles and multiple rocket launchers, on the frontline with Tell Rifaat.

Iran is currently making efforts to persuade Turkey to abandon its military plans. Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian arrived in Damascus on July 2 to discuss the issue right after holding talks with senior Turkish officials in Ankara.

Tehran reportedly wants the SDF to hand over its areas in the northern Aleppo countryside to the SAA in order to prevent a new Turkish military operation. While both Ankara and Damascus appear to be open to this solution, the SDF is not yet ready to make such a compromise.

The Objective

I know that the SDF will never disarm because they want to carve a country out of Syria and Turkey. Russia cannot get them to disarm like it did the other rebels. The SDF is much more stubborn.

So, my suspicion has been officially confirmed by SF. Basically, Turkey wants the whole of Syria back to Assad if only Assad could reach a compromise that accommodates “some” demands of the opposition and disarms the Kurds. Erdogan wants to end the Syrian problem and focus on other important matters.

The U.S made a big mistake in Syria by supporting the Kurds. The U.S will NEVER be able to persuade Erdogan to join any other regime-change operation against Assad. America’s presence in Syria is a serious national security threat for Turkey.

Russia must not make a second mistake of alienating the broader Sunni population of Syria. If Russia could reach a negotiated settlement where Assad allows significant participation by the opposition in governance, the U.S will come under intense pressure to leave Syria as it won’t have any humanitarian cover. It’s time Assad stops treating Syria like his real estate. It belongs to all Syrians and they should have a say on how their country is ruled.

I can’t see Turkey giving up on the Sunni opposition to Assad. Everyone knows they are the majority, which is why Russia and Assad don’t like any kind of democracy there. But if Assad insists on this path, I can’t see any agreement with Turkey in the long term. Russia and Assad want Turkey to pull out of Idlib and other parts of Syria so they can brutally conquer it with their indiscriminate bombings. They want to rule the Sunnis by force and rule as they wish. This will not happen as long as Erdogan or a similar-minded person rules in Turkey.

Assad is delaying America’s departure from Syria with his unwillingness to negotiate in good faith with the opposition. Erdogan has repeated many times that he won’t send the Syrian refugees back to their death at Assad’s hands. If Assad looks forward to a future where he rules over Syria like before, then he is mistaken. The longer America stays the likelier another regime-change operation.
Mr. Assad, it’s time to reach an agreement with the opposition so that you can secure Turkey’s support to eject America and its terror partners in Syria.
