Interceptor drone units will be established in the Moscow Military District (MMD) to protect critical infrastructure facilities, the district’s press service told TASS on September 9.
“To strengthen air defense of critical facilities in the Moscow Military District, a decision has been made to form specialized FPV interceptor units staffed by reservists,” the press service stated.
The new units are being created to rapidly counter enemy one-way attack drones and provide reliable protection for military and civilian infrastructure facilities, the press service said. The units will be equipped with high-speed first-person view (FPV) interceptor drones.
According to the MMD, instructors are currently undergoing retraining. Military personnel with combat experience are learning the latest training methods for operating FPV interceptor drones so they can later pass this knowledge on to reservists.
The training program includes studying drone technical characteristics, developing skills on specialized simulators, and conducting practical flights at training ranges, the press service said.
Once instructor training is completed, training will begin for reservists who have signed contracts with the Russian Defense Ministry.
Ukraine has increased its attempts to strike Moscow in recent months, at times launching hundreds of drones in an effort to overwhelm Russian air defenses and hit energy facilities and administrative centers in the capital and surrounding areas.
In response, the MMD has been working to strengthen the lower tier of Moscow’s air defense network. In July, the district’s press service announced that the first mobile fire groups had completed training and entered combat duty to defend key facilities and centers in the capital. These units are armed with heavy machine guns and smoothbore guns.
The addition of interceptor drone units is expected to further strengthen Moscow’s defenses by providing a flexible means of engaging drones that evade traditional air defense systems.
