On October 19, ten Israeli police officers were wounded, including one in serious condition, as a result of a bomb blast in the Nur Shams refugee camp close to the city of Tulkarem in the occupied West Bank.
Border Police officers were operating in the camp to detain wanted Palestinians when they came under fire and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were hurled at them, the police said in a statement, adding that one of the IDFs exploded near the police force, seriously wounding one officer and lighting wounding nine others.
The Tulkarem Battalion of al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, claimed responsibility for the attack, saying in two separate statements that its fighters targeted vehicles and bulldozers of the police and ambushed a group of officers in Nur Shams.
From its side, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that a drone strike was carried out after an armed cell was identified near the forces operating in Nur Shams. A video of the strike, the first to hit the West Bank in more than five months, was released by the IDF.
In a joint statement, the IDF and police said that their forces had been operating in the refugee camp since late last night, arresting at least ten wanted Palestinians.
The Palestinian Authority health ministry reported that a total five Palestinians were killed in the strike and overnight clashes.
Israel stepped up operations in the West Bank after the October 7 Hamas-led surprise attack from the Gaza Strip. Palestinians in the occupied region have been also holding protests and clashing with the IDF and police forces.
According to a statement by the IDF, at least 524 wanted Palestinians were arrested across the West Bank, including more than 330 affiliated with Hamas, since the war in Gaza broke out. Palestinian health officials said that 74 were killed and more than 1,300 others were wounded during the same period.
The clashes in Nur Shams shows that Palestinian fighters in the West Bank are capable of opening a new front against Israel. An increase in attacks in the region could further complicate the IDF’s mission in Gaza.
