Saraya Awliya al-Dam, one of the leading Iran-aligned armed factions in Iraq, on March 17 shared video footage showing a first-person view (FPV) quadcopter drone wondering within the United States embassy compound in the highly-secured Green Zone of the capital, Baghdad, highlighting a new threat to American forces in the country.
The faction said that the FPV quadcopter was on a “reconnaissance” mission, and this is likely current as no fuse or detonation mechanism is seen installed on the drone in the footage.
The Saraya Awliya al-Dam is a faction of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), which has been launching attacks against American forces in Iraq and neighboring countries since the start of the American-Israeli war on Iran.
This was not, however, the first time an IRI faction was documented using FPV quadcopters. Just two days earlier, Kata’ib Hezbollah released video footage showing two strikes with such drones on buildings at the diplomatic support center, formerly known as Camp Victory, close to Baghdad International Airport.
FPV quadcopters are also believed to have been used in the March 14 attack on the U.S. embassy in Baghdad, which completely destroyed A Giraffe 1X surveillance radar and damaged a Ku-band Radio Frequency System (KuRFS) radar. The latter was a part of a Fixed Site-Low, Slow, Small Unmanned Aircraft System Integrated Defeat System (FS-LIDS).
The video feed from the FPV quadcopters used by Saraya Awliya al-Dam and Kata’ib Hezbollah appeared to be extremely clear, which suggests that the drones were guided via fiber-optic cables.
Such drones, which are completely jamming-proof, typically have a range of 10-20 kilometers, and according to this, the latest attacks near Baghdad were most likely launched from nearby areas.
The appearance of FPV quadcopters with IRI factions poses a serious threat to the U.S. military, and even diplomatic presence in Iraq.
While the factions have so far shown restraint in the use of these drones, this could change in the near future. The U.S., like the rest of the world, does not likely have a solution to this threat.
Systems protecting the U.S. embassy and American forces deployment sites, like the FS-LIDS, could be easily taken out by FPV quadcopters, which would open the way for attacks with larger fixed-wing suicide drones, or even unguided artillery rockets and guided missiles.
