Early on August 29, Israeli warplanes carried out a series of airstrikes on the Gaza Strip in response to what was called “riots” by Palestinian protesters.
In a statement, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that the airstrikes hit a military compound used for manufacturing weapons and training as well as an entrance to a tunnel of the Hamas Movement, the de-facto ruler of Gaza.
“The strikes were in response to Hamas launching incendiary balloons into Israeli territory and the violent riots that took place yesterday. Both examples of how Hamas continues to employ terror tactics and target civilians,” the statement reads.
Palestinian sources confirmed that the Saladin military position and a farm located in northern Gaza were struck. No casualties were reported. Gaza’s armed factions targeted Israeli warplanes with heavy machine guns. Nevertheless, non were hit.

Late on August 28, hundreds of Palestinians gathered along the separation fence in the eastern part of Gaza to protest against Israel’s tight siege on the Palestinian region. The protesters set off explosive devices, launched incendiary balloons and stoned IDF posts as a part of a tactic they call “nigh confusion”.

Violent protests on the Gaza border have ended for tonight, but more are planned every night during the next week, with incendiary balloon launches during the day. No official count on injuries for tonight, but reports claim at least 11 Palestinians hurt from IDF fire. pic.twitter.com/gkzKsF9Hyz

According to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, eleven protesters were injured during the protests, three with live bullets fired by IDF soldiers.
Last week, a similar escalation took place in Gaza. An Israeli border guard was critically wounded after being shot from a close distance by an armed Palestinian protester. The IDF responded with a series of airstrikes.
The situation in Gaza will apparently escalate further. Palestinian activists are planning to hold a series of protests along the separation fence in the upcoming few days.
