New Bombing Reported In Syria’s Damascus (Photos)

On April 21 morning, an explosion rocked the district of al-Wurud in the northwestern part of the Syrian capital, Damascus.

The Syrian Arab News Agency said that the explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) that was planted under a car in the district. The IED explosion wrecked the car. However, no one was harmed.

According to Syrian pro-government sources, that targeted car belonged to a colonel of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA). This indicates that the attack was an assassination attempt.

This was the second bombing to rock Damascus this April. On the 6^th of the month, a military engineer of the SAA was killed when an IED ripped through his vehicle on the capital’s southern highway.

Despite strict security measures by Syrian authorities, several terrorist attacks took place in Damascus in the last few years.

Last year, the Syrian intelligence neutralized a cluster of terrorist cells which carried out eleven terrorist attacks in Damascus between 2019 and 2021. The cells were being run by al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) from the northwestern region of Greater Idlib.

The recent attacks in Damascus may have been orchestrated by terrorist groups like HTS, or even ISIS. Terrorists have been attempting to destabilize the capital since the start of the war in Syria eleven years ago.
