Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed on April 4 to respond to efforts to harm Israelis as the country prepared for a possible Iranian response to the April 1 Israeli strike on the Iranian embassy in the Syrian capital, Damascus.
Speaking at a meeting of the security cabinet soon after his phone call with United States President Joe Biden, Netanyahu said that “Iran has been acting against us for years — directly and via proxies. And, therefore, Israel acts against Iran and its proxies — defensively and offensively.”
“We will know how to defend ourselves, and we will act according to the simple principle: that those who harm us or plan to harm us, we will harm,” he added.
At least 13 people were killed in the strike on Damascus in which, according to Tehran’s ambassador, Israeli F-35 stealth fighter jets fired six missiles that leveled the five-story consular building adjacent to the embassy.
The attack claimed the lives of seven Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps members, including two senior commanders of the Quds Force, Brigadier Generals Mohammad Reza Zahedi and his deputy Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi.
Iran’s top officials, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and President Ebrahim Raisi, vowed a harsh response to the Israeli attack.
Awaiting the response, the Israeli military bolstered its air defense array by calling up reservists, halted home leave for all combat troops and began jamming GPS signals in several parts of Israel, including Tel Aviv city.
Two informed Iranian sources told Reuters on April 4 that Tehran’s response would be calibrated in order to avoid escalation.
An Israeli source also told Channel 12 news that Israel would respond accordingly to any Iranian attack but added it appeared neither side wanted an escalation that could lead to an all-out war.
On April 5, Deputy Chief of Staff for Political Affairs of the Iranian President, Mohammad Jamshidi, revealed on the X social platform that Iran had warned the U.S. leadership not to get dragged in Netanyahu’s “trap.”
“Stay away so you won’t get hurt,” the senior official said, noting that the U.SS asked Iran in response not to target American facilities in the Middle East.
While the deadly attack on Iranian embassy in Damascus was widely seen as a Israeli response to Iran’s continuous support to Palestinian armed factions in the Gaza Strip and other “resistance” forces in the region, the real purpose of the attack may be to provoke an Iranian response that could help Israel drag the U.S. into a direct confrontation with Tehran and its allies.

i beg to disagree. the war is part of a stragegy by isreal to annex the gaza strip and thus get access to the gas field(s) off gaza coast and to build the ben-gurion canal, and it’s part of building erez israel, which includes all of lebanon, as well as most parts of syria, jordan, iraq, kuweit and significant parts of turkey as well. it also serves to get rid of a nuisance that could bite them into their backs when they want to march towards iran.
