A mysterious guided glide bomb hit a Ukrainian target in the city of Dnipro some 100 kilometers away from the frontline in the special military operation zone on June 28, marking the deepest Russian airstrike with such a weapon so far.

After the airstrike a trail of smoke was see near Dnipro, which suggests that the bomb used was boosted by a rocket motor.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Russia was developing a rocket-assisted version of the the UMPK [Russian: УМПК; Унифицированный модуль планирования и коррекции, Unified gliding and correction module] kit, dubbed the UMPK-PD [Russian: РД Расширенный Лиапазон, Extended range].

The original kit, which converts freefall bombs like the FAB-500 into guided glide bombs, has a range of 80 kilometers. The UMPK-PD is said to have an even longer range.

While the airstrike on Dnipro may have been carried out with an UMPK-PD-equipped bomb, Russia already has a weapon in service with similar characteristics called the Grom-E1.

The Grom-E1 is a rocket-assisted version of the Grom-E2 guided glide bomb, a derivative of the Kh-38 air-to-surface guided missile. While the E2 has a range of 50 kilometers, the E1 range is reported to be up to 120 kilometers. The bomb is guided via a GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system and armed with a 315 kg warhead.

While the use of Grom-E-series bombs in the special military operation zone was reported in the past, it was not used to attack targets this deep behind the frontline.

All in all, the airstrike on Dnipro indicates that Ukraine will soon have to deal with a new problem. The Russian Aerospace Forces is not only expanding the range of its attack capabilities on the tactical level, but is also doing this while focusing on precision.
