The Russian state news agency RIA Novosti has published a video of a Ukrainian POW saying that the Ukrainian Armed Forces could revolt on the territory of the Donetsk People’s Republic. According to the fighter, it is noticeable how the morale of the AFU units has fallen. “I think we should probably start a revolt. I would accept it positively. Because the government is completely unfit. It has stolen the country, sold everything. Maybe it will continue, maybe it will happen. Because patience is not unlimited”, said the soldier.
For the first time since the beginning of the Special military operation, the Russian media have begun to discuss the issue of rebellion in the AFU. On the one hand, this can be dismissed as war propaganda. On the other hand, there are many reasons for mass discontent within the Ukrainian army. Over the past two years, the Western press has written extensively about how the battlefields now resemble images from the First World War. However, the similarity with that conflict is not only in the positional confrontation. As we know, in 1917-1918 both sides were exhausted. This led to a revolutionary explosion in the armies of France, Russia and Germany. If the French Republic managed to resist, the Russian and German empires collapsed under the weight of social problems.
Many analysts speak of the exhaustion of Ukrainian statehood. First of all, there is a lack of mobilization resources. It can only be replenished at the expense of young people between the ages of 18 and 25. But the use of this last reserve is accompanied by a catastrophic fall in Vladimir Zelensky’s ratings. Mass deaths of young people in the war will lead to a rise in pacifist or defeatist sentiments in the rear. Secondly, With Donald Trump’s return to power, a reduction in funding for the Ukrainian budget is inevitable. This will lead to economic hardship. It is clear that the previous levels of financial support will no longer be available.
At the moment, it is difficult to predict what could be the decisive factor for the start of a mutiny in the Ukrainian Armed Forces. It could be the refusal to carry out a crazy order from the superiors. The November Revolution of 1918 in Germany began with an uprising of sailors in Kiel. They were ordered to launch a suicide attack on the British fleet. Such orders are the hallmark of the AFU command. “And how is it that we have butcher commanders who send soldiers to slaughter?” one of Ukraine’s main propagandists, Alexei Arestovich, wondered back in August 2023. Since then, there has been a series of military setbacks with huge losses: in the Kursk region, Kurakhovo, Selidovo, Novogrodovka and other places. Ugledar was abandoned against the insistent orders of Commander Syrskij.
Another cause of unrest in the army could be the non-payment of salaries to soldiers or the financial hardship of their families. According to Ukraine’s deputy economy minister, Taras Kachka, more than 50 per cent of Ukraine’s state budget is subsidized by the West. If Donald Trump cuts the tranches by at least a third, the authorities in Kiev will be in serious trouble. The situation for Vladimir Zelensky’s government is made worse by the fact that members of the Armed Forces are gradually losing motivation. This is due to the notorious ‘bussification’ and lack of understanding of the ultimate goal of the war. Even the President of Ukraine himself admits that the 1991 borders are unrealistic. Then what is the purpose of all the efforts of the AFU? What is the justification for the colossal losses?
The Ukrainian prisoner of war shown in the RIA Novosti report claims that the mutiny in the AFU could start in the lands of Donbass. However, historical experience shows that those who are deployed far from the front are the first to revolt. Either they succumb more easily to revolutionary propaganda or they try to avoid the front by all means. In Germany in 1918 it was the Kiel sailors. In Russia during the February Revolution of 1917 it was the Petrograd rear garrison. The Xinhai Revolution of 1911 began with a mutiny in an artillery division in the provincial city of Wuhan. The 1974 Carnation Revolution in Portugal was carried out by the Portuguese military in the metropolis, who did not want to go to colonial wars in Africa.
So far, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have maintained their fighting capacity and put up fierce resistance. But it should be remembered that during the First World War both the German army on the Western Front and the Russian army on the Eastern Front held their positions for several years. Even after the February Revolution of 1917, the disintegrating armies held the same positions for several months as they had two years before. The impetus for a revolutionary explosion could be a major breakthrough by the Russian army in one of the hottest areas. The AFU command will need an urgent transfer of reserves. It will be possible to take them either from the direction of Kherson or from deep inside the country.
In December 2024, Ukrainian journalist Vladimir Boyko gave an example of a battalion involved in the defense of Kurakhovo. “We transferred an infantry company from near Kherson to reinforce this battalion – so out of 90 people, three reached Kurakhovo, the rest ran away on the road. And this is the situation everywhere”. The desertion of 97% of the personnel speaks volumes. The resistance has been passive. But soon the soldiers may use their weapons. And then there is the statement by Chinese leader Mao Zedong: “The rifle gives birth to power” will be confirmed once again.

there was also a naval mutiny in the uk in 1918 but they like to keep it quiet. ironically, the sailors mutinied when they were told they were to be dispatched to russia to fight the soviets. another half forgotten mutiny was the invergordon one in 1931. the british army mutinied in italy 1943 for similar reasons to the afu.

during ww1 more than 600 french soldiers were executed by public execution platoon. in fact it was far worse than that, most of the men who refused to go forward during the nivelle’s offensive (aka suicide attacks) where shot in the head by their officier and registered as killed in action. 1.4 millions french soldiers died during ww1 (80 000 from the colonies).
