More Than 20 Countries Joined U.S.-Led Coalition In Red Sea: Pentagon

More than 20 countries have joined the United States-led coalition to protect Red Sea shipping from attacks by Yemen’s Houthis (Ansar Allah), the Pentagon revealed on December 21.

The Houthis, who control much of Yemen’s Red Sea coast, are a part of the so-called Axis of Resistance that is backed by Iran and opposes Israel. The group has fired several missiles and drones at the southernmost Israeli city of Eilat since the beginning of the Israeli war on the Palestinian Gaza Strip. It also assaulted a number of Israeli-owned ships and announced a blockade on all ships heading to Israel.

“We’ve had over 20 nations now sign on to participate” in the coalition, Pentagon spokesman Major General Pat Ryder told journalists.

Ryder said the Houthis are “attacking the economic wellbeing and prosperity of nations around the world,” effectively becoming “bandits along the international highway that is the Red Sea.”

Coalition forces will “serve as a highway patrol of sorts, patrolling the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden to respond to — and assist as necessary — commercial vessels that are transiting this vital international waterway,” he said, calling on the Houthis to cease their attacks.

So far, at least ten ships have been attacked by the Houthis and another was seized and is currently being held with its crew in Yemen.

The United States announced the multinational Operation Prosperity Guardian in the Red Sea on December 18. At the time, the United Kingdom, Bahrain, Canada, France, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Seychelles and Spain were named as members of the coalition.

Leader of the Houthis, Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, warned two days later that the group would strike back if Yemen was attacked.

The U.S. is reportedly considering strikes against the Houthis. Such a move is guaranteed to spark a serious military confrontation. The Iranian-backed group maintains a large arsenal of advanced anti-ship weapons and never hesitated to respond to attacks against its territory in Yemen.

“the united states announced the multinational operation prosperity guardian in the red sea on december 18. at the time, the united kingdom, bahrain, canada, france, italy, netherlands, norway, seychelles and spain were named as members of the coalition.” this is not correct. only uk agreed to take part in us initiative. france said it will command their forces themselves, so said italy, spain will obey only nato command, norway and netherlands willonly send some “commanders” to bahrain

i feel that the us led “coalition” only exist on paper. france, spain and italy want to save some face and retain the option to withdraw their presence at any time. as for norway and the netherlands, their presence is symbolic. uk is the only member of that coalition. not sure about canada and australia. but will be that “coalition” fool enough to confront iranian proxies? iran deployed anti-ship missiles, i assume “coalition” will last as long as the first us warship sinks.

Peppe il Sicario

in the meantime, tens of thousands of houthis have responded to the call to arms against israhell and are mobilizing to attack israhell. this will not end well for the axis of evil.

Dave

good point! as usual, it‘s anglo-american imperialism.

Boycott usa the world's bully

australia chickened out, it is said because its warships have no defense to counter drones. usa empire struggling to catch up to the 21st century.

“posse” lol. yes that is what it is. usa has never grown out of its cowboy days, and the cowboy approach now applies to all nato. no wonder the world hates usa and western europe, the posse brutes.

you know.. i get the feeling that should one of those yanky carriers get sunk, the squatters in israel might just pack their bags and start fk’ing off back to poland.

so it’s not all as bad as it looks..

screw them!! they can all move to long island ny or miami beach and feel at home!!! no one wants them in europe!!! maybe they can move to india who seem to love them.

Boycott usa the world's bully

doubt a carrier would sink. but you make a good point. cannot be fun living in israel with drones, missiles and sirens every night. how do they sleep? the isreal colonists have totally messed up their integration into the region and become hated so they will have to leave. like white rhodesians.

kotromanic

didn’t the drone stuff start in israel. they helped the turks and azeris destroy the armenians in karabahk. they probably thought those gentiles were to stupid to build and opperate them and it will be an advantage only for them.

Boycott usa the world's bully

good point that is where small drones started ‘active service’ widely publicised in the media. but many videos and reports iran and china also had already developed small military drones. so not clear it started in israel only. seems to be a few countries at the same time. from the vast range of drones available for sale on alibaba my bet is china was first into small drones.

huhu

one more point. the situation in the red sea threatens israel with a blockade, which means an immediate american response. but the strength of the american coalition after the debacle in afghanistan is limited, so the us would probably try a decisive blow against iran, instead of using proxies in yemen, lebanon and syria. it would likely provoke a russian and chinese response, so it is ww3 scenario. this is probably why we are witnessing an arms race in ai, hypersonic missiles and space.

and after 20 years of defense preparation the arabs now think – “how can we hit those ships”?

kotromanic

well the huthis were able to hit civilian ships. we will see if they can hit military ones.
the last us ships who were hit was one who collided with a civilian ship in the south china sea
i think and the uss cole who got attacked bye a suicide bomb on a small boat somewhere in
the arab region.

zman

it’s a coalition…of the imagination, that is. they call on the houthi’s to cease attacks, which have killed no one. but israel who slaughters everyone and everything…go ahead, we’ve got your back. the control israel has over the us is becoming common knowledge thanks to those like scott ritter, who tells it like it is. us msm is finding harder and harder to hide israeli crimes and resistance is growing even in us.

kotromanic

you do not need anyone just watch the news and how everyone is eager to show support to israel while condemning russia. every russian bomb is condemned and every israeli cheered.

Dave

yepp… one could say „coalition of the unwilling“… but it‘s not even that.

Boycott usa the world's bully

how do the houthis get ships location intel? the red sea looks small on a map but it is still a big area. how do they know the coordinates where to aim their drones and missiles? sea shore radars, surveillance drones, allies’ (who?) satellite intel?

they never call it nato in any war so they can still say nato is only a defensive alliance yes some nato member individually descided to attack some country but that had nothing to do with nato at all *wink.

torpedoes and underwater drones can’t be that hard to make.

hash
hashed
Boycott usa the world's bully

under water drones are much harder to design and build. power system much bigger due to higher resistance of water. water proof against salt water. resistant to water pressure, even a few meters, also making it heavier. communication systems harder. like a torpedo is harder+ more expensive than a missile.

BunkerDwellers

i suppose you are right as to underwater drones and their signal being blocked by water. torpedoes are more than a century old at this point though. the asymmetry of small motor boats with torpedoes seems like it would be compelling to put the effort into making them.

the law of the sea means that yemens territorial waters extend 12 nautical miles. 23 km. the contiguous zone is a further 24 nautical miles. the yemenis may actually be acting in accordance with international law when they intercept the ships heading to israel in their waters since their passage has to be innocent passage which arguably it is not given israel’s genocide in gaza. any views?

hash

Boycott usa the world's bully

i’m guessing the red sea is an international recognised sea passage, like the bosphorus in turkey or gibraltar straits, so free passage for all ships. but when every day israel, fully backed by usa, uk, france is killing 100’s of civilians andf flattening dozens of buildings, including hospitals and schools, no one cares about international law anymore.

Mbiyd

yes but here’s the argument: you are allowed free passage if its innocent passage. a ship whose passage is to israel, which is violating international law in gaza, could be deemed to be non innocent passage and the yemenis within their rights to prevent passage. its certainly a stateable case they have.
