in the current political situation, china practically dictates to russia how much natural gas it wants to buy from gazprom and how much it is willing to pay for the gas. china already pays significantly less for russian pipeline gas than for pipeline gas imported from other countries. a situation where china leads and russia whines is, to say the least, humiliating for the kremlin.
the construction of the planned power of siberia 2 gas pipeline from northern russia to china seems to be delayed. according to the original schedule, the construction work was supposed to start already during the current year.
the leaders of russia and china have been rather silent about the details of the new pipeline project, but mongolia’s prime minister l. oyun-erdene let it be understood in an interview with the financial times a week ago that the project is not moving forward. gazprom has lost the majority of the european gas market. the transportation capacity of the siberian power 2 would be around 50 billion cubic meters per year.
