at least 1,200 members of the alawite community have gone missing or been detained since the syrian coastal massacres in march this year, amid confirmed information that some were arrested during those events by syrian regime security and military services.
according to families’ testimonies, many of the missing were taken to detention centres without warrants or judicial procedures, and their families and lawyers have been denied any information about their place or fate.
sohr warns that continued hiding of their fate raises serious fears of enforced disappearance, torture or even execution, in the absence of transparency and independent judicial oversight.
sohr holds the syrian government fully responsible for the safety of the missing, and demands the immediate reveal of their fate, and immediate contact with their families.
