Military Situation In Deir Ezzor As Fighting Intensify In Strategic City

Click to see the full-size map

Last weekend, ISIS launched a large advance against the Republican Guard and the National Defense Forces (NDF) in order to tighten the siege on the strategic government-held 137th Brigade Army Base or even to capture it.

So far, terrorists have reportedly seized the Panorama Roundabout and the nearby Driving school. An intense fighting is ongoing in Tal Umm Abboud and Tal SyriaTel.

Ok so what is the logic behind capturing this city by ISIS, if you are loosing on all fronts ? Morale boost ?
Or they are trying to capture it and then leaving it to SDF or any other faction when they collapse( and that is surely going to happen sooner then later)

El Diablo

To kill the infidels, as ever

FlorianGeyer

If that were the case ,why have there been no ISIS attacks in Israel. In fact why was Israel embedding Israeli advisers in ISIS formations? A Colonel of the Golani Brigade was arrested by the Iraqi forces with ISIS terrorists in 2015 or 16. Israel was also treating ISIS wounded in its hospitals until this year.

Samuel Boas

That is highly debatable, there is no proof whatsoever of that Colonel arrested in Iraq, I wish it were true as well but I haven’t seen a shred of proof.

They said he was an Arab Israeli who joined ISIS.. I am sure there are many others. We already know SAS were directing Al Queda in Libya.. Not much different than ISIS. Heck half the troops of ISIS and Al Qaeda are trained by the US no theory there either.

QUIN TÕNIS

If that were the case ,why have there been no ISIS attacks inside of Iran? I can play reverse logic also. Sure like to attack Europe more then Iran for some reason.

FlorianGeyer

Iran is mainly Shia ,whereas ISIS is Sunni, so there would be great difficulties for ISIS to get a foothold in Iran. Terrorists need to blend with populations to survive and need the collusion of some to obtain food and shelter etc. Its only in the West that they can use AirB&B for anonymous shelter :)

Akm

South front dedicated a whole article on it 3 days ago I think.

Nobody really knows. There is a certain irrationality to ISIS’ actions. Anyone’s guess is as good as any I suppose. Those who believe that ISIS is on the US and Israel’s payroll will say they’re just following orders. I laugh at that theory but I have to admit it does make freakish good sense in regards to this tenacity to take Deir Ezzor. As long as the SAA holds Deir Ezzor, the US cannot take it with its proxy forces, when ISIS takes it, all bets are off. So in that sense I do think that the US is not doing much to prevent ISIS from taking this city.

As for ISIS’ motives, maybe they think that it will provide a major morale boost. Maybe they think this is their Ardennes offensive and that by inflicting this crushing defeat they can reverse their fortune and free up thousands of men for duties elsewhere.

dutchnational

I agree on your point of irrationality.

The siege of Kobani also continued for more then a month after a stubborn but sane organisation would have given up and here it is going on and on.

IS made its largest successes when there were striking like lightning, highly mobile, relatively lightly armed. Now they have the majority of their forces pinnen down around Raqqah and DeZ and lose in detail everywhere else. (I do not count Mosul as it is reported a max of say a thousand fighters there. Were they able to reconstruct mobile collumms of three to four thousand, they would have much more impact.

wimroffel

The ISIS tenacity in Kobani had also a rational aspect. At that moment ISIS had an aura of invincibility. They took one city after another and nobody seemed capable of stopping them. Such an image helped them a lot on the battle field as it stroke fear into the heart of their adversaries. It also played a very important part in their attractiveness for recruits.

John Brown

You think ISIS actions are irrational and that Israel does not control ISIS??? Why don’t you look at the Russia insider pictures of ISIS fighters in Israel hospitals, shaking hands with Israeli soldiers and the fact ISIS only attached Israel once by mistake and apologized for it as the Israeli defense minister said!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Qatar, Saudi break up is great news and changes everything. Putin’s actions to split up the Israeli, Arab Satanic alliance, payoff!!!! This is also great news for Syria and Iraq. It means that Turkey and Qatar are breaking away from the axis of evil, racist supremacist Israel, Saudi Judea Arabia and the USSA. This is also very bad news for ISIS, Al CIA Qaeda, the FSA, and the SDF. Turkeys withdraw from the NATO pact looks certain now. Look for war to break out between the Kurds and Turkey at any moment. If this happens the racist supremacist Israeli empire and its Yinon plan will have been defeated in Syria, Iraq and Turkey.

Mikronos

That PR exercise seems to be confined to assisting ‘rebel’ groups in the Golan area. Having ‘friendly’ jihadis fighting Assad’s forces in the Golan is more preferable to Israel than having UN peacekeepers getting in the way of the shelling they can do to stop Assad arming Hezbolleh, or punishing ISIS/Al Nusra.

John Brown

I think you need to stick to the Debka board Mikronos Mossad. Limited o the Golan!!! Israeli airstrikes all over Syria to support ISIS and Al Qaeda, as are Israeli arms and Israeli advisors all over Syria helping terrorists!!!!

John Mason

It is a deterrent. US have a plan to annex/occupy southern and northern Syria and having ISIS block Syrian army allows the US to set up bases on Syrian soil.

Solomon Krupacek

thanatos

Mikronos

The city is already held by ISIS. It has been for the past two years. What wasn’t taken was the airbase and the military complex southwest of the town, which included a strategic height overlooking the city – until, apparently, that fell to ISIS after the ‘mistaken’ bombing raid last December.

The city, by the way, has been the joyful recipient of a good deal of aerial bombardment, from both sides, and now looks more that Mosul than anywhere civilized.

Greywolf

One more thing. 100% sure that there are mass migration acuring between jihadi factions. Ppl jumping from one faction to another when they are told so.. So when isis collapses they are going to switch on green lighthes and pretended they were on FSH site all the time.

Bob

All of ISIS’ advances into the Dier Ezzore township have been direct result of USAF’s late 2016 heavy airstrikes on SAA’s defensive fire control positions on the Tral Kroum hilltop, shown on map above. That air assault was very specific targeting exercise and no ‘accident’ – look at the map and the dire consequences – it was specifically designed to break open the SAA’s defense of the town. There is no clearer example of the US playing both sides of the game in Syria than this – publicly claiming to be targeting ISIS, yet actually attacking the SAA, with in-depth targeting that actively aided ISIS to breach the SAA defenses. The US leadership simply cannot be taken at their word.

aeolius

Yes! It is good policy to have SAA and ISIS thugs kill each other. When Raqqa falls it will free up ~30,000 Kurdish troops for duty elsewhere. Where would you use them? Toward der-ez Zor> el Quim. Obviously having both banks of the Euphrates and its dams as its boundary gives Kurds a strong post-war position. And plenty of water to trade with SAA for support against Turkey in the North

Alex

even beter policy would be to kick the kurds out of Syria

dutchnational

Yes, ethnic cleansing is very attractive to kurdophobes. That is, until they become the victims in their turn.

Alex

By the looks it’s the kurds who are starting the unrest against the legitimate govmnt. not the other way around.

Real Anti-Racist Action

That is actually the most peaceable idea. They should deport the Kurd’s back to their homelands, Turkey. They can all go live in Turkey and Israel.

Bob

Oh gawd.

Solomon Krupacek

you all do believe to this???

yes, that airstrike was a rogue act. but lose of 100 soldiers can not take out the whole garrison. the question is: why had not so dramatical effect the russian airstrikes on isis? why did not tokk back the hill after airstrike?
i go further… why are not able to merge these splitted areas? why are not able to take beck territories in the mid of city?

i think, the reason is something else. i have dark feeling. this garrison is dying. and assad is personally responsible for this situation. Deir ez zor IS REALLY strategical city. Despite this fact never sent 2-3 thousand soldiers.

remember, syria can axist without alepoo city, but can not exist without euphrates.

jirinaS

Bob is right. ISIS attack was coordinated with the US airstrike. The Ezzor pocket was therefor cut into the two pieces. It was not possible to land on the airport. Only parachute. Do not forget it is impossible to bring heawy wepons to Deir Ezzor by air.

Solomon Krupacek

no, it was cut in two later.

jirinaS

Because ISIS took the important hills .http://militarymaps.info (Deir Ezzor) US-led coalition aircraft in Deir ez-Zor applied 4 airstrike on positions of the Syrian army, killing 62 and injuring about 100 soldiers. The military were surrounded by the IG. Strokes caused two F-16 and two A-10, then the terrorists have gone on the offensive.

Sean Glennie

Looks like this is a job for Russian paratroopers, although they won’t be rearmed & reequipped in time to improve the situation around Deir Ezzor.

Bob

Yep. The USAF destruction of SAA hilltop position was disaster for the defense. Dier Ezzore township has Euphrates at rear and wide open plateau at front – and those three hills out front. That is defensive gold-mine situation. That is why Dier Ezzore was the ISIS meat grinder for years – ISIS forced to commit to open frontal attacks across exposed plateau under SAA’s fire control from hilltop vantage point. That and fact SAA at Dier Ezzore include the 104th Airborne Republican Guard. The USAF breached the SAA defensive line for ISIS – not ISIS.

Solomon Krupacek

My gold question is: why did not destroy isis defense line on the SAME hilltop the russian attacks? not one, dozens.

something is wrong.

kraaiiii

the did en thus destroyed last remaining fortifications, but if SAA retake the hilltop the cannot hold it no fortification left, out in the open sitting ducks it only loss of men and resource. Dier Ezzore lacks everything bulldozers, men, heavy weapons

goingbrokes

Deir Ezzor defenders do not have the resources to mount serious offensive operations, or to take the losses it would entail. The Tardah mount fortification was a key fort to hold the defence of the city together. It has no such significance going the other way. And as kraii points out the it could not be fortified very easily under fire now. Losing the key fort led to the eventual fracturing of the city in two. USAF attack also destroyed a number of tanks and IFVs that were extremely useful in a siege defence.

Solomon Krupacek

probably. only i do not understand, why did not droh russians heavy technique? they have the largest antonov and for such use.

Solomon Krupacek

this was the best answer i read in last months!

Bob

Thank you for your positive response.

Cycloben

I do. Deir Ezzor is on the way of America’s “Salafist Principality”. It has to be dealt with with any means necessary.

igybundy

Lack of tanks and gas.. City is under siege.. Cant get new heavy weapons or gas. US destroyed like 3 tanks on the hill and artillery.. All non replaceable. They have a lot of old tanks but useless to waste gas and take the hill back. ISIS can use ATGM on any tanks they send up.

There are 10,000 soldiers in DZ with Hezbollah, NDF, local tribes and Russian Soldiers.. It is a large area and has to be protected on all sides. Without equipment and Gas, the men can not do much other than defend. ISIS dont need so many men because thy can attack when and where they want.

John Brown

Do take off your bacofoil and stop confusing zionist filth with ordinary, everyday decent civilised Jews, it isn’t seemly.

RamboDave

He did not mention the word “Jew” in his comment. He only mentioned the “racist supremacist Israel”. That seems rather appropriate.

Come on guys, the count down for ISIS in Deir Ez Zor is started: 13 days left and they will collapse to SAA. You are doing a grat job for your people and your country.
