On January 12th, the intensity of mutual strikes decreased in the Russian and Ukrainian rear areas. The Armed Forces of Ukraine attempted only several drone strikes in Russian border regions, while the Russian military refrained from devastating missile attacks deep in Ukrainian territory.
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, only one Ukrainian drone was spotted and destroyed in the border Bryansk region last night. In the morning, three more Ukrainian drone were destroyed in the Belgorod, Kursk and Bryansk regions. No damage was reported as a result of the attack.
Russian strike in Kramatorsk:
Meanwhile, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation are developing their offensive in different directions both in the Donbass and in the Russian Kursk region.
After the strategically important city of Kurakhovo came under the full control of the Russian army, Russian forces are improving their military positions, securing control of new settlement in this direction. Ukrainian forces are still holding control of their military positions in a pocket southwest of the city. In their turn, Russian forces continue attacks across the Sukhie Yaly River, destroying Ukrainian defense on this southern flank.
The assault groups of the Russian Southern group of forces raised Russian flag in the village of Yantarnoe located south of Kurakhovo. Russian assault began on January 10th and after only two days of fighting, the village came under control of fighters of the 10th Tank Regiment of the 20th Division of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation officially confirmed the full control of the settlement.
The village of Yantarnoe is located on the northern bank of the Sukhie Yaly River and it served as an important logistics hub of the Ukrainian army in the Kurakhovo direction because there is the road to Dachnoe to the north used for military supplies by the AFU. The retreating Ukrainian groups are forced to abandon large field area north of the village.
After their victory in Kurakhovo, Russian forces increased their pressure on the southern frontlines and rapidly expanded their zone of control in the area of Velyka Novosilka. According to preliminary reports from the frontlines, Russian forces took control of the village of Neskuchnoe located south of the town. The AFU are only in control of Vremevka and their main stronghold of Velyka Novosilka.
Velyka Novosilka is rapidly turning into another besieged fortress. Battles are ongoing on its eastern outskirts, while the Russian army surrounded the stronghold from different directions. Ukrainian forces lost Novy Komar to the north. Russian advance cut the road west of the settlement and the recent victory in Neskuchnoe paves the way for Russian assault from the southwest. Ukrainian units are still prohibited to abandon their military positions and escape from the cauldron but the only way out to the northwest is already under Russian fire control. Taking into account all the previous battles for so-called fortresses, like Ugledar or Selidovo, the Ukrainian military command is unlikely to save lives of the doomed units in Velyka Novosilka and another Ukrainian garrison will be abandoned forced to resist in the cauldron.
Swedish CV90 IFV under attack:
The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation also resumed offensive operations in the Krasny Liman direction. As a result of the recent battles, Russian forces largely expanded their bridgehead on the western bank of the Zherebets River. They advanced from their military positions southwest of Ivanovka near Terny and approached the village of Kolodezi. Ukrainian line of defense is laying between Kolodezi and Novoe to the north. In the case of Russian breakthrough and their victory in Kolodezi, Russian forces will have only 15 kilometers left to approach the town of Liman (Krasny Liman) along the road.
Ukrainian soldier surrender in Volchansk, Kharkiv region:
On January 12th, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation confirmed another victory. The Russian army took control of the village of Kalinovo located north of Kupyansk in the Kharkiv region. The official report confirmed that the Russian troops successfully crossed the Oskol River. Their advance is threatening the entire northern flank of the Kupyansk grouping of the AFU. Control of Kalinovo paves the way for Russian assault on Zapadnoe to the north, where battles are already ongoing on the western outskirts, and it threatens Ukrainian forces in Golubovka located on the northern outskirts of Kupyansk.
The Russian army is also repelling the AFU from the Russian border Kursk region. Ukrainian attempts to launch new offensive there were thwarted and the Russian troops are already expanding their zone of control in the areas of Mahnovka south of Sudzha, Kurilovka and Ivano-Daryevka. Russian advance in the Kursk region is supported by offensive operations in the border areas in the Ukrainian Sumy region. On the northern flank, Russian forces reportedly expanded their zone of control near the village of Zhuravka. On the southern flank, they approached Prohody. Russian forces are already in control of the border areas north of Miropolye on the Ukrainian territory.
The Russian military is unlikely to encircle the entire Ukrainian grouping operating in the Kursk region, but the ongoing attacks in the Ukrainian border areas are containing large Ukrainian forces and threaten Kiev with loss of more Ukrainian settlements, while it is throwing forces into grinder on the Russian soil.
