Military Overview: Heavy Battle For Krasnogorovka Coming To Its End

The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation are close to taking control of the last settlement on the outskirts of the Donetsk urban agglomeration where some Ukrainian forces are holding their positions – the town of Krasnogorovka.

Krasnogorovka was one of the Ukrainian strongholds from where Kiev forcess attacked Donetsk civilians during the decade of the war in Donbass. Ukrainian military positions have been fortified there for years. The loss of Krasnogorovka means the destruction of the entire first line of Ukraine defense on the outskirts of Donetsk built there since 2014.

Both Russian and Ukrainian military sources reported Russian advance on the streets of the town. According to the latest reports, the Russian military took control of the Solnechny district. Over the past day, they advanced up to 3 kilometers. As a result, the north-eastern part of Krasnogorovka came under Russian control. At the same time, Russian forces are rapidly expanding the zone of their control in the north-western part of the town. According to reports from the front, the pace of Russian advance has recently increased and they are capturing up to 50 buildings per day.

Russian advance allowed to cutt off the road from the village of Galitsinovka in the north of Krasnogorovka. As a result, the Ukrainian garrison was cut off from supplies.

Ukrainian unoficial military sources shared videos of Ukrainian servicemen complaining on their comrades from the 59th Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who abandoned their positions on one of the flank of the remaining garrison.

In their turn, Russian servicemen shared footage of their operations on the streets of Krasnogorovka. The town is stormed by servicemen of the 110th Brigade, 5th and 346th Brigades of Special Forces of the Russian Ministry of Defense.

The video shows fighters of the 5th Brigade and the 153th squadron of the 346th Brigade evacuating an abandoned Ukrainian servicemen under Ukrainian fire. The wounded Ukrainian soldier first tried to lie that he was civilian, but his military boots revealed the truth. His comrades left him dying in the ruins, and the Russians asked if he was not mined. The retreating Ukrainian forces like mining corpses of their killed or wounded brothers-in-arms. The wounded Ukrainian in Krasnogorovka was lucky, he was saved by the Russians, who risked their lives during his evacuation.

The Ukrainian military command reportedly began withdrawal of main forces from the northern outskirts of the town. Only some Ukrainian reconnaissance groups launch operations on the streets. The mop up operation is yet to secure Russian control of the captured residential areas.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine are taking defense across the Lozovaya River on the northwestern outskirts of Krasnogorovka.

After the Russian military took control of the large industrial area in Krasnogorovka in April 2024 LINK, the Armed Forces of Ukraine took up defense in high-rise buildings and residential quarters in the northern part of the town. As a result of prolonged battles, their strongholds were destroyed.

Russian assault in Krasnogorovka was supported by the offensive operations around the town. The Russian army recently took control of the village of Nevelskoe located north of Krasnogorovka and advanced westwards threatening the Ukrainian garrison remaining in the north of Krasnogorovka with encirclement. At the same time, the Russian army took control of the village of Georgievka and continues advance in Maksimilyanovka located south of Krasnogorovka. East of Krasnogorovka, Ukrainian opertions were complicated by the field areas and the local water reservoir. Thus, the ongoing retreat to the northwestern outskirts of Krasnogorovka is the only way to save lives of Ukrainian servicemen.
