On September 21, the Russian Centre for the Reconciliation of Opposing Sides in Syria announced that unknown militants shelled several positions of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in the northern Lattakia countryside and the northwestern part of the city of Aleppo during the last 24 hours.

“Eight Syrian servicemen were wounded as a result of attack against Qalaat Marza, Lattakia province,” the Russian reconciliation center revealed in a statement.

Furthermore, the SAA shoot down an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), which was flying over its positions in the northern Lattakia countryside. The UAV was either armed or carrying out an observation mission.

These attacks came only five days after the announcement of the Russian-Turkish deconfliction agreement on the governorate of Idlib. Under the deal, a 15-20km demilitarized zone will be established around the northwestern governorate.

The attacks in northern Lattakia and western and southwest Aleppo were likely aimed at sabotaging the Russian-Turkish agreement because these regions will be a part of the demilitarized zone.
