Russia’s Africa Corps announced on June 19 that it had foiled a large ambush in cooperation with the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) close to the capital, Bamako.
The engagement took place two days earlier. Units from both the African Corps and the FAMa were conducting a patrol along the Diéma–Didieni road and clearing the path for a large civilian convoy that was following them, when they suddenly came under fire.
The units began firing back quickly, according to a statement posted to the official Telegram channel of the African Corps, which notes that Russian armored vehicles reversed direction and immediately engaged a large group of militants traveling on motorcycles.
The African Corps released video footage showing one of the armored vehicles, a Tigr-M, pursuing fleeing militants at full speed.
Loads of arms and several motorcycles were also seized from the militants, according to photos released by the African Corps.
The Diéma–Didiéni road road is a vital 180-kilometer stretch of a highway located in western Mali. It serves as a major segment of the Bamako–Dakar Northern Corridor, which is the primary economic and logistics lifeline connecting Mali’s capital to the port of Dakar in neighboring Senegal.
Al-Qaeda’s Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) was likely behind the failed ambush. The terrorist group has been very active in that part of Mali since it launched a large-scale offensive across the Sahel country in cooperation with the separatist Tuareg Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) last April.
The offensive played more in favor of the FLA, which managed to capture vast parts of the Kidal region in northeastern Mali.
The African Corps and the FAMa are already bolstering their units, and are expected to launch a counteroffensive sometime later this year.
