United States President Donald Trump warned that Venezuelan President Nicholas Maduro’s days are numbered during a CBS interview released on November 2.
Asked if the U.S. was going to war against Venezuela, Trump replied: “I doubt it. I don’t think so.” However, when asked if Maduro’s days as president were numbered, the president replied: “I would say yeah. I think so.”
Trump also appeared to deny multiple recent reports indicating that the U.S. military is preparing to attack military targets allegedly linked to drug cartels inside Venezuela and could do so within days, although he did not rule the idea out completely.
“I wouldn’t be inclined to say that I would do that,” he said. “I’m not going to tell you what I’m going to do with Venezuela.”
Tensions have been on the rise between the two countries over the drug problem since August, when the Trump administration doubled the reward for the arrest of Maduro to $50 million on drug trafficking charges then deployed an amphibious ready group with thousands of marines close to the Caribbean Sea on a so-called “counter narco-terror operation”.
Recent days saw even more escalation by the U.S., which bolstered its naval deployment in the Caribbean with an entire carrier strike group.
The U.S. military has already carried out 15 strikes against boats allegedly carrying drugs in the Caribbean and the eastern Pacific Ocean, killing 61 people. The latest strike, announced by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth on November 2, took place in the Caribbean.
“This vessel—like EVERY OTHER—was known by our intelligence to be involved in illicit narcotics smuggling, was transiting along a known narco-trafficking route, and carrying narcotics. Three male narco-terrorists were aboard the vessel during the strike, which was conducted in international waters. All three terrorists were killed, and no U.S. forces were harmed in this strike,” Hegseth said on X.
“These narco-terrorists are bringing drugs to our shores to poison Americans at home—and they will not succeed. The Department will treat them EXACTLY how we treated Al-Qaeda. We will continue to track them, map them, hunt them, and kill them,” he added.
Despite Trump’s attempts to maintain ambiguity, more and more signs of a near U.S. attack on Venezuela are appearing every day.
A report published by Reuters on November 2 revealed that the U.S. military is upgrading and rebuilding facilities at a military base in Puerto Rico, close to Venezuela.
The news agency said that it received satellite images showing reconstruction work that began at the former Roosevelt Roads military base. It also noted that the U.S. is building facilities at civil airports in Puerto Rico and Saint Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, approximately 500 kilometers from Venezuela.
In preparation of an attack by the U.S., Venezuela has been mobilizing, deploying air defenses and conducting military exercises focused on decentralization.
The U.S. is clearly interested in a regime change in Venezuela. Trump’s recent remarks clearly indicate this. This does not, however, mean that the U.S. military will invade Caracas to achieve this goal. Any attack on the country will likely be limited, and designed to weaken Maduro rather than outright remove him from power. This would open the way for the U.S. to tap into the country’s vast oil reserve, the largest in the world.
