President Nicolás Maduro signed a state of emergency and ordered all national defense plans to be implemented “at the appropriate time and under the appropriate circumstances,” the Venezuelan government announced in a statement issued on January 3 morning, just a few hours after the beginning of an attack on the country by the United States.
The government condemned what it said was a “very serious grave military aggression” by the U.S. against multiple parts of the country, including the capital, Caracas, and the states of Miranda, Aragua and La Guaira.
Also in its statement, the government called on Venezuela’s social and political forces to mobilize in order to defend the country.
“The people of Venezuela and their Bolivarian National Armed Forces, in perfect popular-military-police unity, are deployed to guarantee sovereignty and peace,” the statement reads.
The government added that it will also file complaints before the United Nations Security Council, the UN Secretary-General, and other international bodies, demanding the condemnation of the U.S.
The attack came following months of escalation by the administration of President Donlad Trump, which in October raised the reward for the arrest of Maduro on drug charges to $50 million, then launched in September an operation targeting alleged drug boats in the Caribbean Sea and the Eastern Pacific Ocean killing over 100 people so far.
U.S. officials confirmed to CBS News that Trump ordered strikes on sites inside Venezuela, including military facilities, without providing any additional details.
Other officials told CNN later that the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee was not notified by the Trump administration ahead of the strikes.
Videos posted online indicate that many military sites in Caracas were hit, with evidence suggesting multiple air defense systems were destroyed and reports saying that the residency of the country’s defense minister, Vladimir Padrino López, was targeted.
There were even videos showing U.S. helicopters attacking Fuerte Tiuna in Caracas, which is Venezuela’s primary military headquarters.
The attack was condemned by Turkey, Iran, Cuba and Colombia. The president of the latter, Gustavo Petro, shared a list of targets hit in Venezuela, which included—in addition to Fuerte Tiuna—La Carlota Airport; a military garrison in Catia La Mar; the Federal Legislative Palace in Caracas; an airport in El Vigía; F-16 Air Base No. 3 in Barquisimeto; a private airport in Charallave, Caracas; and a military helicopter base in La Guaira.
In addition to all of these targets, rumors emerged that Cuartel de la Montaña, the area where late Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez is buried, was also hit.
The attack initially led to a state of chaos in Caracas with many people attempting to flee the capital, but later it was reported that the military was deployed.
The direct goals of the attack, which clearly involved special forces, remain unclear. U.S. media reports from recent months said that the Trump administration studied plans ranging from limited strikes, to capture of Maduro and the seizure of Venezuela’s oil fields. As for now, the attack is still very limited.
While the U.S. began its pressure campaign against Venezuela using the drug problem as a pretext, last month Trump openly voiced his interest in taking over the country’s oil reserves, which are the largest in the world.
