In the early hours of the day, Juan Guaido published a video on Twitter addressing the people to rise up against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his government.
En el marco de nuestra constitución. Y por el cese definitivo de la usurpación. https://t.co/3RD2bnQhxt
— Juan Guaidó (@jguaido) April 30, 2019
An initial target for the coup was the Francisco de Miranda Airbase, their attempts to capture it, however, and opposition supporters were forced to withdraw.
Regardless, from an undisclosed location, Juan Guaido posted another video, this time on YouTube calling for round 2 of the coup attempt to continue on May 1st. He claimed Venezuelans have the opportunity to conquer their future. “Tomorrow the whole of Venezuela must hit the streets,” he concluded.
Mañana continuamos con la ejecución de la #OperaciónLibertad. Iniciamos la fase final y estaremos de forma sostenida en las calles hasta lograr el cese de la usurpación.

Guaido said the action that he has initiated this week was not a coup but “a peaceful rebellion” and said Maduro today “does not have the backing of the armed forces.”
Despite initial reports that the military is on the opposition’s side, Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez said that it still supports Maduro.
In an interview with CNN, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo claimed that Nicolas Maduro was planning to flee the country to Cuba, but was talked out of it by Russia.
“We’ve watched throughout the day, it’s been a long time since anyone’s seen Maduro. He had an airplane on the tarmac, he was ready to leave this morning as we understand it and the Russians indicated he should stay. He was headed for Havana,” Pompeo claimed.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told CNN that what Pompeo was saying was fake and that “Washington tried its best to demoralize the Venezuelan army and now used fakes as a part of information war.”
US National Security Adviser John Bolton alleged that Venezuelan officials, including the Defense Minister played a role in the coup attempt.
— John Bolton (@AmbJohnBolton) May 1, 2019
Bolton said it was a “very delicate moment” for Venezuela.
“If this effort fails, they will sink into a dictatorship from which there are very few possible alternatives,” Bolton added.

Both Bolton and US President Donald Trump blamed Cuba for the situation in Venezuela and warned it of repercussions if it doesn’t end its role in the country.
The United States condemns Cuba’s direct role in propping up the failed Maduro regime in Venezuela. We will continue to take actions to cut the Cuban regime’s lifelines in Venezuela and hold it accountable for the destabilizing role it plays in this man-made crisis.

If Cuban Troops and Militia do not immediately CEASE military and other operations for the purpose of causing death and destruction to the Constitution of Venezuela, a full and complete….

The Lima Group expressed its support for the “constitutional process undertaken by the Venezuelan people, under Interim President Juan Guaidó, to recover democracy in Venezuela.”
In the late hours of April 30th, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro made his first address to the nation to proclaim that the coup attempt was thwarted.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro stated that the La Carlota Military Base was never taken, but that a group of rebellious soldiers concentrated in the Altamira highway.
Accompanied by Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez he highlighted the loyalty of the Bolivarian National Armed Force in neutralizing the attempted coup.
He went on to say that the government has faced attempted coups as never before in history because of the extreme right’s desire to “impose an illegitimate government and subject the country to a neocolonial model.”
“Today was a contrast of peace and violence in Venezuela, a coup d’état, delivered to foreign interests and the gringo empire,” Maduro said.
Maduro denied US claims that he planned to flee to Cuba but was persuaded to remain in Venezuela by Russia. The president also claimed that some perpetrators had fled to the Brazilian embassy in Caracas.
Maduro also blamed Guaido’s mentor, Leopoldo Lopez for the coup.
According to Chile’s Foreign Affairs Minister Roberto Ampuero, Lopez had gone with his family to Spain.
Quiero actualizar información: Lilian Tintori y Leopoldo López -de ascendencia española- se trasladaron a embajada de España. Se trata de una decisión personal, considerando que nuestra embajada ya tenía huéspedes.

“I want to update the information: Lilian Tintori and Leopoldo Lopez -of Spanish descent- moved to the embassy of Spain. It is a personal decision, considering that our embassy already had guests.”
Leopoldo Lopez requested protection April 30th afternoon as a guest at the Chilean diplomatic mission in Caracas, Chilean Foreign Minister Roberto Ampuero confirmed through his Twitter account.
“Lilian Tintori and her daughter entered as guests to the residence of our diplomatic mission in Caracas. A few minutes ago, her spouse, Leopoldo López, who stayed with his family in that place, joined him. Chile reaffirms commitment to Venezuelan Democrats,” Ampuero said.
Venezuelan Ambassador to the UN Samuel Moncada said that the coup attempt was defeated. He said that “those gentlemen have been defeated, but that defeat will have consequences in many parts of that fictitious government.”
Despite that, the coup attempt hasn’t finished, in all likelihood May 1st would be round 2 of “Operaction Libertad.”
Mike Pompeo and John Bolton also repeatedly warned that Juan Guaido must not be touched and that there would be a harsh response by the US if it happens.
Most likely the US, expecting an escalation issued a prohibition on all US carriers’ operation in or above Venezuela below 26,000 feet and gave all US operations 48 hours to depart the country.
The US FAA has issued a prohibition on US carriers operating in Venezuelan territory/airspace below 26,000 feet and has given any US operators in Venezuela 48 hrs to depart via the ‘most expeditious possible route’.
