On the afternoon of May 22, Ukrainian media reported a large explosion in the city of Kramatorsk in the DPR, which is under control of the Ukrainian military.
The explosion reportedly thundered in the area of the Starokramatorsky machine-building plant. However, no Russian strikes were confirmed by the local sources.
Videos from the spot showed a large fire in the city. The secondary detonation is heard in the area.
The fire likely broke out on the facility used by the Ukrainian military as a warehouse for military equipment. However, Ukrainian military officials are unlikely to reveal their losses.
The city of Kramatorsk is a strategically important stronghold of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) in the north of the Donbass. Located in the Ukrainian rear areas, it serves as an important hub for transfer of the military equipment to the front lines in the Bakhmut and other regions. Ukrainian reserves and military personnel are deployed there.
Kramatorsk is constantly targeted by Russian forces. For example, on May 21, the Russian Ministry of Defence reported that an ammunition depot of the 67th Mechanized Brigade of the AFU was destroyed in the area.
The Slavyansk-Kramatorsk city agglomeration is the last densely populated area in the Donbass which remains under the control of the Ukrainian military. Russian forces will continue their strikes in the area until the cities are liberated. It seems that today blunder of Ukrainian servicemen helped the Russians and resulted in fire on a military facility.
