On July 29, a large blast rocked a base of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) all-female force, the Women’s Protection Units, near the town of Sarrin in the northeastern countryside of Syria’s Aleppo.

The blast reportedly emanated from an ammunition depot located inside the base. While some news sources said that the blast was caused by a fire, other claimed that the blast was the result of a strike by a Turkish combat drone.

According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the blast wounded several fighters of the SDF. The group has not commented on the incident, yet.

The SDF’s base in Sarrin is located near a former base of the US-led coalition, where several units of the Russian Military Police and the Syrian Arab Army are currently deployed.

The blast came just a day after a Turkish drone strike that targeted a vehicle of the SDF near the town of Ain Issa in the northern Raqqa countryside. The strike claimed the lives of four personnel of the group’s internal security service which is known as the Asayish.

The recent Turkish drone strikes on SDF-held areas in northern and northwestern Syria as well as the ongoing preparations by the Turkish military and its proxies to launch a new operation against the group suggest that Turkey was behind the blast at Sarrin Base.
