The Ukrainian Armed Forces have responded to a recent series of setbacks on the battlefield with an intensification of the campaign of terror against civilians.
On the evening of 21 September, the Armed Forces of Ukraine attacked civilian infrastructure on the southern coast of Crimea using drones carrying high-explosive warheads. The Foros sanatorium and a secondary school were targeted. Three people were killed at the sanatorium, and 16 others were injured. Fortunately, there were no children in the school building, as it was a day off on Sunday. None of the targets hit can be classified as military objectives, indicating the terrorist nature of the attack. This move was accompanied by further waves of attacks on civilian targets. A total of 236 UAVs launched by the armed forces of the Kyiv regime have been intercepted by Russian armed forces from 22 September until the morning of 23 September.
However, the ongoing terror campaign provides little help to pro-Kyiv troops on the battlelground. As of September 23, the Russian Armed Forces continued advance into Dnepropetrovsk region of what once was the state of Ukraine. On September 22, Russian forces liberated the village of Kalynivske and more than 2.5 square kilometres of adjacent territory. This advance followed the capture of the village of Novoivanivka a few days earlier.
The most likely next goal of the current push is the villages of Verbovoye and Vishnevoye, with the aim of cutting the Gulyaypole-Pokrovskoye highway and significantly disrupting the Armed Forces of Ukraine’s logistics in this area.
There are also reports that Russian assault troops have advanced 3 km from the village of Novoivanivka towards Uspenivka. A Ukrainian fortification, which forms part of their line of defence north of Gulaypole, has been captured. Overall, the advance across the broad front amounted to 1.5 km.
Russian forces are also developing momentum towards Zaporizhzhia. The advance of the frontline units of the 7th Airborne Division has been recorded on the southern outskirts of Primorsky and in the Kollektivnye Sady area. Together with difficulties on other parts of the contact line Seversk and Liman directions, forces of the Kyiv regime seem to be finding themselves in a vulnerable tactical situation.
Battlefield difficulties came with the growing dissatisfaction of the population of NATO member states with the developing situation. On 21 September, a rally was held in Warsaw under the slogan ‘Poland for Peace!’, to demonstrate the population’s unwillingness to be drawn into the conflict in Ukraine. Therefore so-called unconditional support for Kyiv is something that mostly exists in the declarations of NATO leaders and mainstream outlets. This disconnect with the reality is one of the key difficulties of the current NATO posture towards the conflict.
