Kuwaiti security forces foiled “a terrorist plot” targeting a vital facility and arrested a citizen affiliated with ISIS before the plan could be carried out, the country’s interior ministry announced on August 12.
In a statement, the ministry said the State Security Service uncovered the plot following intensive monitoring and surveillance.
Investigations found that the suspect received training in explosives and drone manufacturing and built a drone intended for use in an attack on a vital facility, the ministry said, adding that legal procedures had been taken against the suspect who was referred to the relevant authorities.
The ministry also said its security agencies will continue proactive efforts to detect and counter activities or plots that threaten Kuwait’s security and stability.
It further stressed that it will take a firm stance against anyone seeking to endanger the country’s security or the safety of citizens and residents, and will deal decisively with suspicious activities in accordance with the law.
Footage released by state security showed two small fixed-wing drones and related electronic parts, in addition to chemicals used to manufacture explosives.
The plot appears to be inspired by Ukraine’s attack on Russian strategic aviation bases last year, which became known as Operation Spider Web.
The development comes amid high tensions in the region sparked by the United States-Israeli war on Iran, which is currently in a stalemate. Kuwait was hit hard by Iranian retaliatory strikes, which targeted not just bases hosting American troops but also energy infrastructure.
Similar strikes hit energy infrastructure across the region, with Iran denying responsibility more than once, and describing some of the attacks as false-flag operations by Israeli intelligence.
Both the U.S. and Iran have ceased strikes since last month, and recent reports indicate that they are about to reach an understanding through Oman to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The drone attack foiled in Kuwait could have sabotaged the talks, playing in favor of Israel, which is in favor of resuming the war.
