On August 24, the Kurdish “Ghadab al-Zaytun” operations room announced in an official statement that its cells have carried out 26 special operations against the Turkish military and its proxies in northern Syria since the beginning of June.
According to Ghadab al-Zaytun’s statement, 50 fighters of the Turkish-backed Free Syrian Army (FSA) and 5 Turkish soldiers were killed and 43 others were injured as a result of the operations, which covered the area of Afrin, the areas controlled by the Euphrates Shield (ES) and the northern governorate of Idlib.
The Kurdish operations room also stressed that it is an independent local movement from the people of Afrin and claimed that it has no links to any political or armed group.
“We, the young men and women of Afrin, as a movement of retaliation against the enemy and its mercenaries, declare that we are not affiliated with any political or military body directly or indirectly, as we regard our operations as part of our moral duties towards our people and our region,” Ghadab al-Zaytun’s statement reads.
Despite of Ghadab al-Zaytun’s claims, many Syrian activists believe that the operation rooms is affiliated with the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), which announced after the fall of Afrin that its forces will shift its strategy from a direct confrontation to a guerrilla tactic.
