Kurdish Forces Sustained Losses In New Round Of Turkish Shelling In Northern Raqqa

Late on August 5, the Turkish military shelled the towns of Ayn Issa and Sida in the northern Raqqa countryside from its post in the nearby village of Kurmizat.

The shelling targeted positions of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Turkish drones were flying over Ayn Issa and Sida at the time of the attack. Some sources claimed that the drones were also used to attack SDF positions. However, this is yet to be confirmed.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights revealed that the shelling had claimed the lives of two SDF fighters. The Kurdish-led group has not yet commented on this issue.

Turkish forces intensified their attacks in northeastern Syria recently. Last week, the Turkish military and its Syrian proxies shelled a number of towns in northern al-Hasakah and opened fire at civilians traveling on the M4 highway.

The Turkish military invaded northeastern Syria in October last year. The Turkish attack was facilitated by the U.S., which withdrew its forces from many areas in the region.

Turkey committed to de-escalate tension in northeastern Syria under two separate agreements with the U.S. and Russia. Nevertheless, Ankara’s forces didn’t stop the attacks on the SDF. This could soon lead to a new confrontation in the region.
