On August 16, the Jordanian military announced that it had downed a drone loaded with explosives coming from Syrian territory.

“The Border Guard forces … detected an attempt to illegally cross the border from Syrian territory into Jordanian territory, and it was shot down inside the territory,” a military source in the military told the official Jordan News Agency.

The unnamed military source didn’t clarify if the drone was on its way to carry out an attack, or if it was involved in an attempt to smuggle explosives from Syria to Jordan.

The drone was downed just a day after a meeting between the foreign ministers of Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Egypt and Saudi Arabia. The five ministers discussed several issues related to the war in Syria, including measures to counter traffickers active along the Syrian-Jordanian border.

In recent months, the Jordanian military intercepted several drones used by traffickers in southern Syria to smuggle drugs and weapons. Just two days ago, a drone carrying crystal meth was downed over the Jordanian side of the border.

Syria is already taking measures to counter traffickers in its southern region in full coordination with Jordan. Earlier this month, the Syrian military and security forces launched an operation against drug and weapon traffickers along the border line.
