Jordanian authorities announced on April 15 that they had arrested 16 people linked to the Muslim Brotherhood over a plot to covertly manufacture rockets and drones for attacks in the kingdom.

In a statement, Jordan’s General Intelligence Department (GID) said that the kingdom’s security forces found a rocket manufacturing facility alongside a drone factory, both of which were part of “the plot aimed at harming national security, sowing chaos and causing material destruction inside the kingdom.”

The “operatives” were recruited in Jordan and neighbouring Lebanon, the department added, noting that the suspects were referred to the state security court for trial.

Jordanian government spokesman Mohammad Momani revealed later that security forces found rockets in a secret hideout on the outskirts of Amman that were being manufactured with a range of 3-5 kilometers for use against targets inside the kingdom.

In addition, a security source cited by the Reuters news agency said that the suspects were all connected to the Muslim Brotherhood, the country’s largest opposition group and an ally of the Iran-backed Palestinian Hamas Movement.

The GID released video footage showing the rocket manufacturing facility, as well as the confession of some of the suspects.

The plot led to calls in Jordan to ban the Islamic Action Front (IAF), the local wing of the Muslim Brotherhood. While the country’s law on political activities allows the banning of any party involved in “terrorist” acts, such a decision would need the approval of the kingdom parliament, which the IAF holds 31 seats in.

Jordan, which expelled Hamas in 1999, has been struggling to contain the ever growing influence of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Hamas and the Brotherhood have been accused of fomenting anti-government street protests in Jordan amid the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip. Furthermore, Jordanian officials said last May that the kingdom had thwarted an arms transfer from Hamas benefactor Iran, via Syria, to the Muslim Brotherhood.
