Israeli troops are approaching the al-Shifa Hospital, witnesses in the northern part of the Gaza Strip told Al-Jazeera on November 8 morning.

According to the Qatar-based news channel, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) advanced into Gaza City center and some troops are currently situated about 700 meters away from the hospital. Heavy clashes are reportedly taking place in the area. However, the IDF is yet to confirm the advance.

The IDF alleges that the military command center of the Hamas Movement is located under the al-Shifa hospital. Nevertheless, the hospital administration and people who have worked there rejected these claims.

In its latest update on the ground operation in Gaza, the IDF said that ground troops directed a warplane to strike a Hamas anti-tank missile squad. Anoher airstrike killed several members of a squad responsible for launching rockets at Israel, according to the IDF.

Separately, the IDF and the Shin Bet security agency announced that Muhsin Abu Zina, “one of the leaders of weapons production” for Hamas who worked in the manufacturing “strategic weapons and rockets,” was killed in an overnight strike on Gaza.

From its side, Hamas’ military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, announced in the morning that its fighters had destroyed seven main battle tanks and two armored personnel carriers of the IDF with rocket-propelled grenades during clashes in Gaza City and nearby areas. An Israeli soldier was also targeted by an al-Qassam sniper.

Another vehicle of the IDF was reportedly destroyed by the al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, in Gaza City.

Since the morning, the IDF has acknowledged the death of two soldiers, one from the the 52nd “Ha-Bok’im” Armor Battalion of the 401st “Ikvot HaBarzel” Brigade and another from the Air Force’s “Shaldag” special forces Unit 5101. The two casualties brought the number of Israeli troops killed during the ground operation in Gaza to 32.

The new IDF push into Gaza City came just a day after United States President Joe Biden asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “pause” ground operations in the Strip for three days. The request was reportedly rejected.

The IDF later announced that it will continue to allow civilians trapped in northern Gaza to evacuate towards the south for a few hours on November 8.
