On March 16, Israeli Defense Minister Defense Minister Yoav Gallant issued a warning to “whoever is responsible” for the recent northern Israeli highway bombing without mentioning the prime suspect, Lebanon’s Hezbollah.
The bombing took place on the Route 65 highway at the Megiddo Junction on March 13. An Israeli citizen from the Arab village of Salem was seriously wounded in the attack.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and Shin Bet security service said on March 15 that the attack was carried out by a man who infiltrated Israel from Lebanon. Officers of the elite police Yamam counterterrorism unit and Shin Bet officers opened fire at the suspect, killing him just a few hours after the attack. Hezbollah was named as the prime suspect.
“Whoever is responsible for the attack will regret it. We’ll find the right place and time and we’ll hit them,” Gallant said following a briefing with army officials at the 91st territorial division, based at the Biranit camp on the northern frontier.
Gallant was briefed by IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi, Northern Command chief Ori Gordin, and commander of the 91st territorial division Shai Klapper.
“The investigation of the incident is still ongoing… This is a complex attack, but thanks to the intelligence and operational capabilities of the security forces, we will know who is behind it,” Gallant said after the briefing. “I want to say from here, at the northern border, in the clearest way: Whoever is behind this attack will regret it. We will find the right place, the right way, and we will hit back at whoever is responsible for the attack.”
Hezbollah has not yet commented on the Israeli claims. However, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon said that it didn’t notice any infiltration along the separation line with Israel in the last few days.
A mysterious group calling itself the Galilee Forces – Lone Wolves has already claimed responsibility for the Megiddo Junction bombing just hours after it took place. The group also shared a video with locations of key military sites in Israel. The IDF and the Shin Bet completely ignored the group in their statement on the bombing investigation.
While Israel has not officially blamed Hezbollah for the bombing just yet, it attempts to build a case against the group may be a part of a larger scheme.
Israel could use the mysterious bombing as a pretext to strike Hezbollah, or even to launch a full-scale military operation against Lebanon. The government of Benjamin Netanyahu also appears to be exaggerating to distract its ever increasing opponents.
