Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz threatened the Lebanese capital, Beirut, on March 28, after rockets were fired from the country at northern Israeli settlements.
The early morning rocket attack triggered warning sirens in Kiryat Shmona and the nearby settlements of Tel Hai, Margaliot, and Misgav Am, close to the border with Lebanon.
In a statement released later in the morning, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that at least two rockets were launched from southern Lebanon, adding that one of the projectiles was intercepted and the other fell inside Lebanese territory. No casualties or damage was reported.
Several strikes targeted the southern Lebanese area of the Nabatieh afterwards, in what appears to be an initial response by the IDF.
According to Al-Manar TV, which is run by Hezbollah, targeted areas included the outskirts of the towns of Qaaqaait al-Jisr and Khiam.
Commenting on the rocket attack, Katz warned that “the fate of Kiryat Shmona is the same as the fate of Beirut,” in an apparent threat to the Lebanese capital. The minister said that without peace in Israel’s northern border communities, “there will be no peace in Beirut either.”
“The Lebanese government bears direct responsibility for any attacks on the Galilee,” he stated. “We will ensure the security of the residents of the Galilee, and will act forcefully against any threat.”
This was the second such attack from Lebanon in the past week, after three rockets were fired at the settlement of Metula on March 22. Hezbollah denied responsibility for the attack at the time. Katz made similar threats to Beirut after the attack, but the IDF refrained from attacking targets in Beirut.
Hezbollah is yet to deny responsibility for the new rocket attack, which came just a day after five members of the group were killed in two separate Israeli drone strikes on southern Lebanon. Three were killed in the town of Yohmor, and two others on the road between the towns of Barashit and Beit Hanoun. The IDF released footage of the second strike.
A ceasefire brokered by the United States last November was supposed to end the clashes on the Israeli-Lebanese border which broke out more than a year ago after Hezbollah began launching attacks against the IDF in response to the war on the Gaza Strip.
Nevertheless, the IDF continues to launch strikes against Hezbollah. It also continues to deploy troops at five strategic posts in southern Lebanon.
Hezbollah, which took heavy losses during the last confrontation with the IDF, has not yet responded to Israel’s repeated strikes.
Now, Israel could use the rocket attack as a pretext to escalate strikes against Lebanon, or even to resume its offensive against Hezbollah before it could reorganize its ranks.

during the session, yasin zia urged the international criminal court (icc) in the hague to issue an arrest warrant for the taliban’s minister for the propagation of virtue and prevention of vice. he also expressed optimism for a future free from taliban rule, stating: “i hope that one day, as haji sahib (ahmad massoud) says, we can sit in a café in kabul and enjoy tea together.”
zia shared how taliban brutality against a woman led him to join the national resistance front, previously led by afghanistan’s national hero, ahmad shah massoud. recalling his experience during the taliban’s first regime, he stated:“after news of dr. najibullah’s public execution spread, i went to witness the scene. on my way, i saw the taliban whipping a woman in public. i wanted to intervene, but people urged me to stay away.
the next day, i picked up a rifle and joined the resistance.” in response to the vienna conference, the taliban dismissed its significance, claiming that opposition figures were welcome to return to afghanistan with guaranteed security. taliban spokesman zabihullah mujahid stated: “brothers, return to your homeland, and the taliban will ensure your safety.” he further condemned the conference, calling it “anti-afghanistan.”
