The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced late on September 14 that it had carried out strikes deep in Lebanon, targeting what it said were Hezbollah weapons depots in the Beqaa Valley and Baalbek region.
Some of the strikes were reported by Lebanese media close to the Syrian village of Hawsh al-Sayyid Ali, which is adjacent to Lebanon’s Hermel District, some 140 kilometers away from the border of Israel. Four civilians, including three children, were reportedly wounded.
Additional strikes targeted weapons depots and buildings used by Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, according to the IDF, which also released video footage.
The Israeli strikes were apparently a response to a series of attacks by Hezbollah on September 14, which saw the launch of more than 60 rockets at two bases of the IDF close to the northern Israeli city of Safed. The city is located some 13 kilometers away from Lebanon’s border.
Hezbollah and its allies in Lebanon have been launching near-daily attacks against the IDF in support of the Hamas Movement and other armed factions in the Gaza Strip since the outbreak of the Israeli war on the Palestinian enclave last October.
So far, the border clashes have resulted in 26 civilian deaths in Israel and the occupied Golan as well as the deaths of at least 20 soldiers and security officers. On the Lebanese side, more than 870 people have been killed, including 440 fighters of Hezbollah and over 150 civilians.
