The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said on December 2 that it carried out airstrikes against over 400 targets across the Gaza Strip in the past day after the end of the temporary ceasefire in the Palestinian enclave.
Fighter jets attacked over 50 targets in the city of Khan Younis in “extensive” strikes in the southern part of Gaza, according to the IDF.
The IDF added that troops on the ground in northern Gaza directed airstrikes on a number of targets, including on a mosque that was used by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad as an operational headquarters.
Naval forces also carried out strikes on Hamas infrastructure in the south, including on maritime equipment used by the Hamas Movement, according to the IDF, which added that a number of “terror cells” were eliminated and that the targets hit included an ammunition depot.
Overnight, extensive ground battles were reported in Khan Younis, according to Israel’s Channel 12, amid intelligence that some of Hamas’s leadership is present in the city.
The Israeli Army Radio also reported that troops were operating in Gaza City and nearby Beit Lahia in the northern part of Gaza.
Meanwhile, Hamas’ military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, released a video showing an attack with three suicide drones against IDF gatherings in central Gaza. Another video released by the al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Islamic Jihad, showed the wreckage of an Israeli drone that was shot down over the same region.
A temporary ceasefire in Gaza brokered by the United States, Egypt and Qatar ended on December 1 after the release of dozens of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners.
Efforts are reportedly underway to renew the ceasefire. However, the recent movements by the IDF indicate that Israel may be in fact planning to develop its ground operations in Gaza by launching an offensive in Khan Younis and nearby areas in the south.
